researchers have found that organic food is no better for you than any other, so its all a big con.

Why is it a big con?

A lot of it tastes nicer, so it is not necessarily just about being better for you.

Surely it can't be better for you to eat pesticides and additives??

In fact, the gadgie in the report says that he's not looked at the pesticide question at all....so his research isn't worth the paper it's written on.

because it costs a lot more, and I think people are falling for the placebo that it tastes and is better for you

well lets throw away the research that says that it isnt and just go ahead with the option that it might be because the word organic sounds nicer. They body has a great ability to filter things out of your system.

Erm no.

I'm falling for the info given to my brain by my taste buds.

Especially organic meat. Much tastier.

I don't really care that much for most fruit and veg anyways, except for sprouts.

I say the same to the wife, when she insists on having them, every Christmas.

Every Christmas?

We have 'em every roast dinner- Sundays and Tuesdays. Mrs R even grows them in one of her vegetable plots in the garden.

Lots of research has proved that additives, colourings and other artificial ingredients etc are linked with specific illnesses and conditions. This researcher says he hasn't considered pesticides etc. That's one reason why his report won't have found any benefit for organic food.

In any case, one research paper never proves anything in itself. It's simply a result someone has got at a certain place and time, which has to be looked at in relation with other results elsewhere.
Anything else you'd like to know, just ask. :coool:

Like with most things there are many sides to the argument, here are a few links in favour of organic produce:
http://www.organicfoodinfo.net/
http://www.organic-food-for-everyone.com/advantages-of-organic-food.html
http://www.thebestofrawfood.com/advantages-of-organic-foods.html

There are many more, but someone has just reminded me this is a football board devoted to Hartlepool.

The taties, onions, turnips, beetroot, courgettes, broccoli, salad leaves, tomatoes, chillis etc that I pick from my garden are all better than from the supermarket. They taste beter and are organic - dont have any chemicals added to soil or sprayed on them so they must be better - FACT. And I thought cucumbers were the biggest waste of time til I tried them homegrown - and suddenly they actually taste of something, and taste really nice - whereas supermarket ones taste of nowt whatsoever.

Because the supermarkets have got everyone into this 'weekly shop' mindset, they have to pick things and put them on the shelves before they are ripe to ensure that they last the 7 days. This, as well as keeping produce in cold stores for months in a semi-ripe state, growing things out of season and stocking naturally longer lasting (but often bland) varieties contributes to how shite the vegetables are in the supermarkets.

This organic thing is just a big marketing con to sell you tastier fruit and veg that should be the standard anyway at an inflated cost.

That was exactly my point however my knowledgable mate has put it better than me. I wasnt disputing the fact that home grown stuff is better and tastes nicer any idiot knows that. I was talking about the supermarket con of the organic brand (i couldnt continue my argument as had to leave work as was home time)

And, luckily, you and your knowledgeable mate can become even more knowledgeable by reading the posts and links provided above.

Thanks for that I will take it on board, but lots of people buy "organic" from supermarkets thinking that these are simpily better quality or the fact that they are good for your, which isnt the case. I buy fruit and veg from the market stalls in cambridge and they taste brilliant (also they can be cheaper) why would anyone buy the crap from tesco and think its brilliant. Thats the thing about supermarkets the suck you in and you can only buy the range that they want you to buy.

The most convincing argument on here is from Mr BW Hartlepool. If you don't like whats on offer in the shops, grow your own. Our asparagus was great this year and the new spuds grown in pots have lasted two months and we're eating them with dwarf beans which have come on line at the same time.

Just waiting for the tomatoes to go red.

Use a bit of Tomorite for the toms and a bit of NPK for the outside stuff but mostly grown on garden rubbish, leaves dug in to rot down etc.
