Denis has always been a player to divide the fans, mostly because of his inconsistency. He's a bit of a character - one of my favourite memories of him would be our Champions League game v Apollon where he helped tick down a few seconds while we were holding on, by ignoring his indication to be substituted, walking half way across the pitch as if to take a throw, waving with with glee to the Apollon fans were going mental and showering him with coins and lighters. When he did eventually go to leave the pitch, he was 'hurried' by the referee and responded with a John Cleese-esque fake run.

Some of the goals he has scored have been outstanding, but he does come in for a -lot- of criticism. Perhaps this was unfair, what with him being compared to Kevin Doyle, Roy O'Donovan and John O'Flynn (all currently plying their trades at various English clubs), but even I as a fairly staunch supporter have on many occasion hoped for his substitution.

And, so as to indicate that it's not just sour grapes (which is a fairly silly theory anyway since the likes of Doyler and ODonovan left to well wishes and being talked up, and given our current plight we're only too happy to see players offloaded), here's one or two forum threads about him at two times of his career when he seemed certain -not- to leave.
