Can we run a campaign for the return of LOCAL PIES to all football grounds especially Victoria Park...

Death to the syndicated PUKE UP PIES

How about we make campaign for local pies the only forum viewable to none members so Mr Simpson can see what we're up tp or is has officially joined us since we "locked down" the bunker?

Them Puke up pies are rubbish, but I guess Pools or even the League have signed a contract with them. Best pies in the world are from Robinsons of Wingate, Morrells of York Road and Appletons of Ripon.

So sod off.

Don't get this campaign.

The Pukka Chicken Balti pie has been the highlight (sometimes highlights!) of the match for me over the last two seasons.

And I have something of a pedigree as a pie judge. In the 90s Pools pies were voted the 3rd best in the league. The Northern Echo wanted to do a photo opportunity with an, ahem errr shall we say 'ample', Pools fan. The club instantly rang my brother who has a similar figure and enthusiasm for pies as me. I've never been prouder of him.

I've tried Pukka Pies twice. One Chicken Balti at Oldham, that was luvverly, and one unknown one at Pools that was rank.

I get the Mince Pukka Pie at Pools and have to say its pretty nice. Its just very, very sloppy and I have to eat it out of the tray with a Plastic Fork, Too messy and sloppy otherwise.

So how about they get a local pieman to concoct one of these fabled balti pies I'm sure they'd manage .. and I'm sure they'd manage to make a pie that didn't fall into the pie dish as soon as you bit into it!

But interestingly Pools always have loads of all the other types of pie. But very few of the delicious balti. I have often gone midway through the first half to find that they have sold out. I have asked a couple of times why they get less of the balti pies only to be told 'I'm sick of people asking that- there's no demand for them'

Also whilst we are on dull pie tales - during one very poor game this year I first went for my first 'balti' after five minutes - only to be told ' I can't sell it to you -its not warm enough'.

Twenty minutes gone ' They aren't hot enough to sell'

Thirty minutes gone and after a third circuit of the millhouse I decided to enquire how hot the pie had to be ' 60 degrees ' the moonlighting brain surgeon said.

I looked behind her at the hot cabinet for warming the pies where I could clearly see a thermostat set to 55 degrees. I spent the next 5 minutes convincing her that eating the pie now posed less threat to my health than the old age (and hunger) I would die of - waiting for it to reach a temperature hotter than the cabinet it was in.

Should pies be "nice" though?
"Cushty" or "brill" or "tasty as owt", but not nice surely? I always reckon if you need a sit down after eating it, the pie is good.

Our rass has started making pies for the Brit lads around here. Today she's made one mince and onion, one chicken balti, three meat and potato, three chicken and mushroom and one beef and prawn (that's for me that it was ace.) She gets almost a fiver a pie off the lads and the local sports bar wants to buy them for half time snackment when the season starts.

Now, where can I get mushy peas.......

The Balti Pukka Pie is nice, to be fair. They're not easy to eat though, and I much preferred the old steak pies at pools to the current pukka ones.

I had a steak pie from Bolams in Sedgfield the other day though, and that was probably the best pie I've had. There's also that butchers on Elwick road, I forget the nameand Peter Stonehouse in Greatham.

I suspect it comes down to money. Phukka probably churn out millions of pies a month so they will cost a lot less to make than a local producer who maybe does a few thousand in the same time.

If Pools bought from a local producer, they would probably have to raise the selling price to get the same margin.

Personally I would pay more for a local pie than a Phukka, but I suspect a lot of people wouldn't.
