No matter the reason, the important thing is it's fooked off.

But I don't quite trust it. I suspect it's just for the time being, 'until they win the next election'.

I'm glad to see it turned down too. But mainly because of the horrendous cost versus little gain, rather than because I'm opposed to carrying an ID card.

Did you have to carry one in France Monty?

You don't have to carry one but you have to have one, which for me is just as bad.
It's just another waste of my time and resources. The two hours I spent getting a totally pointless carte de séjour are two hours I'll never get back. And the same goes here in the UK.

The important thing is to keep opposing it. I doubt very much that the "No to ID" brigade will be relaxing their vigilance. On the contrary, they be looking out even harder for sneaky attempts to do it another way.

but if you are abroad eg spain you have to carry your passport with you if you are driving and in this country you are supposed to carry your driving licence with you when driving in this country so cant see the problem myself other than the cost if it was say £20 every 5 years like the licence i would be happy to carry one

So you're quite happy to be obliged to carry yet another piece of red tape shite around with you?
I'm not asking to do anything special like go to someone else's country or drive a car. All I want to do is leave people in peace and be left in peace, so leave me the fook in peace. I don't need a card for that.

'Until' is what they're thinking, though. They know ID is an election loser.

I think ID hatred is tied up with the whole surveillance issue. An ID card mightn't be just something you carry around, you might need to use for at a good many transactions in everyday life, so that when all these transactions are linked, on some database by some dim but powerful civil servant, you'll have no privacy whatsoever.

My hatred is just having the damn thing in the first place. "It's no skin off your nose" is not a valid argument why I should have one. In fact, I can't think of a single good argument for making me have one if I don't want one and believe me I DON'T WANT ONE. They'll keep a database with all my facts in with or without a card.

For me it's the surveillance issue. I already have bank, library, membership cards etc etc so one more wouldn't really make a difference in itself. I just hate lack of privacy. The latest venues when I found I was being caught on camera were a M&S cafe in Manchester, and in the Gala Cinema in Durham. Neither can possibly be imagined to be a hotbed of terrorism, so why?
I just felt ANGRY.

Won't be a number, will be a Barcode - that way they can automate the process even further. Just a few line on your forehead or right hand will do the trick.

Anyone a fan of Robert Rankin btw?
