As you probably well know Mr S Hartlepool has had a Tory MP in living memory.......it was a bloke called John Kerans referred to as Commnder Kerans RN who got in on the back of being the one time Captain of HMS Amethyst. From memory the MP before him was a bloke called Jones and I'd guess Ted Leadbitter displaced him in the following election.

I am aware of the gentleman, although my interest at the time would be minuimal as I was dreading starting the infants.

He was more than a one time captain; he was more or less the hero of all that Yangtzee nonsense. The incident was in 1949 but they made a film of it in 1957 just in time for the election. He wasn't displaced by Leadbelly; he simply retired after one term.

As for David Jones, he was very highly regarded as an MP - although that doesn't mean a lot I know.
