went to the coop today to buy some smokes, a shop which I am in every day buying shopping / drink / smokes etc, anyway get the the counter and the bloke I always have a natter with askes me for some I.D. Being 26 I generally take this a a compliment but I said sorry mate I dont have my wallet on me anyway I come in here every day buying booze / smokes etc. he replys yeah I know but there is this new legislation that you have to look over 25 if not you get I.D, so I walked home to get it and problem solved.

I know this guy is doing his job but isnt the age you have to buy alcohol and cigarettes 18 so whats all this crap about over 25.

It's an absolute rediculous stupid thing which has come in, the legal age is 18 but you have to LOOK 7 years older than that age!

Our lass couldnt even buy a knife and fork set from the asda last week, what's she going to do cut people up in the street?

If you think someone looks 25 & youre wrong its unlikely that they will be less than 18.
It was initially a safety net implemented by the pubs/off licences to safeguard themselves but seems to have got way out of hand now.
God knows how the school kids are supposed to get pissed with all this crap going on

Our lass works for the co-op and has had the embarassment of asking people blatantly over 18 if they have ID.

Basically the shops are sick of getting done by the government taxation machine. Like speed cameras, like climate change, there is money to be made by sending youngsters into a shop, getting them served and making money through fines etc.

The really annoying thing is that when they send a kid into a shop, they don't send a 15 year old that looks 15/16/17 and see if you cotton on that this kid may be under age and ask for ID, they send in a 15 year old that looks 49. Because they know, that somebody serving, if they think a person is of age, they will serve them. Why would you ask ID for somebody you were sure looked 20/21? (even if they were 12) You wouldn't. Then you get done for serving under age.

So the shops are covering themselves due to this previous dodgy entrapment. If you don't look 25 you get ID'd because few mistakes can be made then.

I know this to be a fact, the cynical scheming bastards send in 16 year old lasses dressed in two piece suits - come on, how many 16 year old lasses dress like that? I know an off door who got caught out and fined, names in the paper etc -
F-ucking wa-nker government c-unts. I wouldn't mind if it was obviously a kid, but sending in a lass of around 5' 10" in height and wearing business woman's clothes and high heels all dolled up to the nines - I know who should have been prosecuted....

I also know it to be a fact, cos like I said, our lass works at the Co-op.

Really they should send 16 year olds that look like 16 year old into shops, then it is a fair cop, but like Parmo says, they find the oldest looking fooker they can find.

Really that should be some defence against under age serving if you can show reasonably that you thought the kid was much older - but it is no defence!

Hence you have to look 25 to buy stuff that you need to be 18 for, because shopkeepers have been caught out so many times by 21 year old looking people that turned out to be 16.

I seem to remember a case in Birmingham where a pub Landlord had been done for serving an underage girl which ended up in crown court. His solicitor arranged for a host of young females to be in a line up and the jury/judge was asked to point out which ones they would presume to be under 18 and ask for id, the case ended up being thrown out.
but that was back in the late 80s ish and it could well have become an urban myth by now :uhoh:
