I had two my first was round Elizabeth way got about £5.50 for it then I got one with the Hartlepool Star was a hell of a round all of warrior park and only paid good wages when there were loads of leaflets and free samples that weighed a tonne.

Still I did end up with about 100+ packets of chewing gum one month as had a load of extra free sample. Mampi did the same round the Fens and always remember he got more leaflets and free sample so therefore more money as he knew the bloke.

£7 a week circa 1998 king oswy shops hindsys, £14 if you done mornings and nights.

Had to get a paper round as we'd just got a phone in and i'd got a massive bill calling my new girlfriend all the time, fool!!

From king oswy shops to the round about at the top, only about 15 papers on a morning, but all spaced out so a bike was needed, or at the time roller blades cos i was a snazzy little mo fo.

Afternoon mails, 67 papers, fulthorpe avenue round to miller cresent, the last paper was my house, fantastic stuff.

Sunday mornings we're a killer, had to do it in 3 parts it was that big, even had to rope in some help from young mullen at times.

I delivered the Hartlepool Star for about 3 years. Stamford Walk, Catcote Road between Fens School and the Baptist church, and Mowbray Road. Was always on the 'waiting list' for a proper paper job at Forbuoys cos the amount of papers used to knack me shoulder and I didn't get any Christmas tips!

Aged 11 - 13 worked for a paper shop in Hart Lane, just up from the junction with Raby Road. Can't remember the wages but it was around the £1 - £1.25 mark. Fooking slave labour.

Next went to work for Lenny Betts at the butchers on Raby Road. £7 a week plus a sunday joint for my mam was good money.

At 15 I was working on a milk round earning about £30 a week including fiddle money. This was incredible dosh, The average wage for an adult at the time was around the £50 mark.

Near Spaldings. It might have been called Machin's but not sure.

I had shitloads of different paper jobs. The first one was at WH Smith's kiosk in the station!

10/6 a week, mornings only and no Sundays. The round must have been centred on Foggy Furze(-ish), 'cos GREENSIDE BOYS' HOME was on it.

I had a paper round from being 12 until I left school at 16. It was for Matty Purcell on York Road which is now Gillens. My first for him started off from the shop and went up to Wooler Road opposite the White House and back down to Mitchell Street and Alderson Street. I then changed to the shorter but three times as many papers round which started at Penryn Street and went up to Burn Valley Road, the second round was a nightmare on a Sunday as I had to go back to the shop half way through because the papers were that big with extra supplements they all wouldn't fit in the bag.

I used to get £8 per week for mornings and nights which went up to a full tenner when Gillens took over. Christmas was great for the tips but we got nowt from Mr Gillen, though the manageress off the shop used to give us a fiver I think

Lemings (or however it was spelled)
I did it for two nights, the free newspaper, remember listening to the Buzzcocks on my walkman while riding the bike with one heavy bag on my shoulder. On the second night I dumped all the newspapers in someone's front garden and never went back. I kept the bag for a few years but dont know what happened to it after that...

Lamberts, near St Cuthberts, paid 22 bob a week in total for morning & night round, & yes, the Christmas tips were fantastic. There was a house at the bottom of Alverston Avenue where the occupants allowed the dog to mess all over the garden. The smell was awful, but fortunately (?) I also had to deliver to their neighbour, so I just leaned over next-door's fence, but still held my breath for the entire time I walked up the neighbour's path.
Later on I delivered meat on the butcher's boy bike, & cycling all the way up Hart Lane to Ryehill Gardens was hard work. That laden front wheel had a mind of its own.
Best paid job was the Cancer & Polio Research round which paid for each newsletter sold. You also got a percentage (10% I think) if any of your customers won a cash prize. A woman in Old Town won about £1500 - the week before I took over!

Got one at the newsagents at the bottom of Elwick Road, can't remember the name of the shop. It was alright for a week, furthest away was top of York Road, then the people in Dalton Piercy got back from holiday...

Did my first paper round for Tommy Raw on the Headland. My memory is going, but I think I got 25 bob a week, for a morning and night and Sunday round. I missed the extra time in the 66 World Cup Final for that one.

When we moved up West View did a round for Tommy Medley(?) in Davison Drive. The morning rounds used to take me ages, I read all of the comics on the way. I delivered well over a hundred Mails on the night round, Annandale Crescent is a bloody long walk, especially when you're delivering to nearly every house. I remember walking slowly past windows on Saturdays, listening for the football results.

I was a Forbuoys paper boy. Round 2, Honiton Way across to Meryl Gardens. I think I lasted all of 6 weeks, I just couldn't hack those early morning starts.
