That Gilbert O'Sullivan one is canny like but do the words actually mean anything?
If so please e-mail me a translation.
Thanks.

If I give up the seat I've been saving
To some elderly lady or man
Am I being a good boy
Am I your pride and joy
Mother please if your pleased say I am He's a Mammy's boy.
And if while in the course of my duty
I perform an unfortunate take
Would you punish me so, unbelievably so

Never again will I make that mistake He's scared she'll take her belt to him.
This feeling inside me could never deny me
The right to be wrong if I choose
And this pleasure I get
From say winning a bet
Is to lose It's nice to do what you like.

When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy
Eating more than enough apple pies
Will I glance at my screen and see real human beings starve to death
Right in front of my eyes I'm all right Jack.

Nothing old, nothing new, nothing ventured
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost,
Nothing further than proof nothing wilder than youth
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine
Nothing physically, recklessly, hopelessly blind
Nothing I couldn't say
Nothing why 'cos today
Nothing rhymed What the f**k can I do about it.

This feeling inside me could never deny me
The right to be wrong if I choose,
And this pleasure I get
From say winning a bet
Is to lose See above.

Nothing good, nothing bad, nothing ventured
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost,
Nothing further than proof nothing wilder than youth
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine
Nothing physically, recklessly, hopelessly blind
Nothing I couldn't say
Nothing why 'cos today
Nothing rhymed See above.

It's weird, the story goes that he used to treat his songwriting as a nine to five job, get up have breakfast, take the kids to school, go home and sit down and write.

One day he did all the above and sat down and there was nothing there. Nothing came out and he couldn't write a word. Hence the title of the song, he wrote the song about not being able to write a song which is, as you say, genius.

The thing about him though was he'd set you up with a really poignant song like Clare, then just as you were starting to like him he'd torpedo you with something like Oo-Waka-doo-Waka-day.

I'd forgotten how suberb, and sad, this song is.

Do you mean poignant in the creepy-as-fook sinister sense? Lovely tune, disturbing words

That is only if you look at it from the view of 'he sounds like a paedophile', rather than he is writing about the daughter of his manager, and remember that not every adult has sexual desires for small children.

No no no you're thinking of Clair.

Anyone who's been to his concerts - what does he sound like without the double tracking?

He sounded okay and was quite entertaining especially
when he louped up onto his piano to perform some
well dodgey dance moves whilst singing "Get Down"
I thought he was gonna be unable to get down to be honest!

And that hair....is it a rug or not?

Ahhhh can anyone remember Pans People dancing to "Get Down"
on TOTP?

"Alone Again, Naturally"....brilliant, sad, touching song. Every time I hear it i'm back in 1972.

I'd put a lot of Carpenters stuff into that category, too.

Spooky that, my reply to MadJohn was much the same on that thread as well, but I didn't remember I had already said it, almost exactly a year ago.

Should we stop the Bunker now, cos we're just recycling old threads? sctatchinghead

All right, I'm going to come out of the closet and admit I think Mr. O'Sullivan wasn't particularly good. A bit lightweight for me.
I'll say no more.

Yeah, I remembered that we'd discussed it before. Mr Monty I wasn't a big fan at the time, I liked Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Grand Funk Railroad, but when you listen to these songs now I think you appreciate them much more.

Mutley, if you were an essentially sober person, like what I am, you would know that this sort of thing happens very often.
