Three blerks in Ladbrokes yesteday. One says: "By youse lot were lucky yesterday." Reply: "We battered them man, hit the bar four times. You lot need need to beat Villa this afty mind." It was at this point I realised the men were talking about Liverpool and Man U. It went on: "Mind you lot have a hard run-in." Reply: "Listen mate, at the end of the day we are used to winning titles." He added: "Liverpool will never be as good as us, so keep dreaming." Reply: "Ah but we have better and more passionate fans."

I walked out at that point and went to Corals. Bunch of not nice people. I think they were taxi drivers but all from Hartlepool.

Never understood anyone who claims to support a team such as man u liverpool etc when they have no connection to them what so ever. "well I have supported them since I was little" that to me speaks volumes about their parents i would do as my dad did with me and take my kids to the footy at a young age. I know this is expensive and people acant afford it the other option would be to slap them round the head if they even looked like supporting such a club that way even the thought of the club would bring back bad memories.

Were my kids is born going to get a map out and the closest team to were that is he will support (so will have to bring the future missus to hartlepool general when she is about to drop)

Apart from town of birth, are there any other 'legitimate' reasons for supporting a football club? The one I can think of is follwing the team your father supports / carrying on a family tradition.

Seem to remember someone on a Danny Baker phone-in choosing his football team by picking a team out of a hat, with all 92 league clubs in the hat (can't remember the team, but it was someone like a Brighton).

Knew a guy who supported Forest for many years, then transferred his support to Birmingham (which was closer to his town of birth than Nottingham was).

Yeah I agree with the father tradition thing and to an extent apart from growing up in the town thats why I support pools, if it was on birth and closest club to that I would support the Boro and that doesnt bare thinking about.

But how can a person says he supports a club like man u liverpool etc and never go to a game and only buy the latest shirt

what an absolute load of fucking bollocks. People have the right to pick whichever team they want. If they go straight for man u because they win the most trophies then yes thats a bit stupid. But its every fans choice as to which team they support.

Why would you pic a team that you or your family have no link to other than oh well they win everything so I will pick them. on that not you may as well pick AC Milan or Sporting Lisbon just becasue you visited the location on holiday.

The only thing that riles me more than people referring to these clubs is 'we' is people applauding or cheering at a TV screen in a pub;

a) they can't hear you

b) If you were that fooking bothered you'd be at the game.

didnt i just say people who choose man u because they always win are stupid? I completely agree with that. But when your a kid you tend to do what your dad does. My dad had no affiliation with pools whatsoever apart from moving to the town to look for work 35 years ago. He took me to watch several games around the north east involving some other north east clubs. Middles something or other, i forget their name now. I enjoyed it most at pools and asked to go again. It was obviously easier and cheaper to go to pools for him so we started going now and again. That was 20 year ago and we have been going solid for the last 15 or so years and been season ticket holders for the last 11. Now by the way of thinking on this thread my dad should not support pools in the slightest...... because he is not from the town nor the country, and supported/ supports queen of the south because thats where he is from. As i said in my other post, people can support who they want.

As well as supporting Pools I've always followed Sunderland as a "second team" due to the fact that my granda was from there and he supported them. I went to quite a few games at Roker Park when I was a kid too and I see absolutely nowt wrong with that. When Pools have played Sunderland there's been no split loyalties whatsoever, Pools first every time.

When my boy was born I wanted to get him some Pools and Sunderland baby gear cos they're my teams. Unfortunately Pools commercial department don't see any benefit from selling baby gear and trying to get the kids kitted out in the gear so up to now he's only got the Sunderland stuff. I can't help but think that Pools are missing out on a fortune in not selling owt for babies like they used to til a few years ago.

Can I ask you if you moved from hartlepool and took your son to watch a football match would you stop supporting pools, I think your answer most probably would be no. So why would anyone else like your father.

he hasnt stopped supporting queen of the south though, he went to several games last season including most of the cup run leading to the final. He cant afford to travel hundreds of miles to watch them constantly so watches pools instead. He is a hartlepool supporter and season ticket holder. The one thing he has never done is sang poolie til i die. Simply because as he said, he isnt a poolie. He is a doonhamer through and through.

So if asked a simple question who do you support he would say Queen of the south and he is a fan of hartlepool. Thats the point I am making your dad doesnt support rangers or celtic (same gesture as man u liverpool etc) just because they are successfull he support two teams he has an offiliation to one were he is from and the other were he lives.

 no he supports celtic because his dad does  to be fair though my grandfather spent a lot of years working in glasgow and attended several hundred celtic games. The point im trying to make is football is football. No matter who you support and why you support them, its the best thing in the world. Its the best (and worst) emotionally when your team win or lose. Even if you are a 'glory' supporter. people should not be villified for the team they choose to support...

No they shouldn't, they should be lined up and shot. They make my stomach turn whooping at Sky fooking Sports, then asking how Pools got on...

The only thing that should dictate which football team you support is geography, the team that you or your families roots are closest to. The game would be in a far better state if that was the case. I'd guess that we have more people in the town who claim to support Liverpool and Manchester United than Pools, which is unbelievably sad.

yes it's sad, but it'll never change. As much as i love Pools, we are a lower league team that will always struggle to attract the armchair fans. It's always been this way and will always be this way.

Be honest, would you really want these people at Pools anyway?

not a case of being better just a case of having a connection to the club you support rather than plucking one out of the air becasue they are successfull etc

to an extent no I dont want them there at the vic but more than 75% of the people who went to cardiff and the extra 2000 or so we get in increased attendances are these fans and they all spend their money when at the match

Who cares anyway? The nature of people in general is that they will be drawn to the biggest and best things.

Why are U2 so popular. I know loads of people who would claim to be U2 fans but they only like them coz they feel like it's the thing to do.

I think Mr B has explained himself well here and he doesn't have to justify why he likes Shan Utd. He certainly shouldn't be given grief for it. He's a season ticket holder at Pools ffs.

No I'm saying I'd bring them onto the field and shoot them.

That would bring the floating fans back, we'll get them to the Vic on the premise that we have a big screen with free beer. When they arrive we shoot them.

Simple.

You aren't a Man United fan then are you? You follow Man United but you are a Pools fan.

You can't be a 'fan' of two clubs, I don't understand that.

The first team I saw was Sunderland V Liverpool at roker park as my dad took me due to the fact my uncle was going who supported sunderland, I didnt start supporting them.

So how many teams does your dad support so far you said Man u, Queen of the south pools and rangers

my point is im a poolie through and through. You only have to speak to me in person to see how passionate i am about them. Yet i like man u a lot. Does that detract from pools in any way? No. So where is the problem? Am i some kind of football bigamist?

my point is im a poolie through and through. You only have to speak to me in person to see how passionate i am about them. Yet i like man u a lot. Does that detract from pools in any way? No. So where is the problem? Am i some kind of football bigamist?

I am not questioning your love for pools and that is evident in your comments and posts on here and I generally agree with you, however cant see how you have a loyalty to man u when you only saw them on the tv. I love football and enjoy watching and large game on the tv liverpool v man u was a great game and the villa one at the weekend. Its possibly becasue I cannot understand supporting another club and this question I got asked frequently at uni says it all.

So which football club do you support?

Hartlepool

oh right, and which topflight or other team do you support?

None as I just said I support Hartlepool.

You do know that Man Utd would be happy to see clubs like Pools shut down don't you? Hell, their former chairman even came out and said as much once.

As did Rarfa at Livergpoooolllogghhh Lar
The bounding bounder.

no I would want them to fold because they are a cancer to football and lower league teams in general.

its a funny old game saint

who cares?!
really???

I dont come from Hartlepool, but I CHOSE to support them....and they were the bottom team in the football league at the time. Fair enough it stemmed from an argument in the pub about how shite it is at Middlesbrough and yes, I may have done it out of spite at the time but I CHOSE to support Pools.
And support is what I do.

It's no secret either that I like Liverpool. so fuc k?!
And it was the first game my dad took me too. Boro v Liverpool at Ayresome Park.
I wanted to see Liverpool with the League trophy, as pretty much most kids then did.

I'm like madjohn in that I hated what happened with the premier league, and never liked what it became and lost a lot of interest in it. But when Jack was old enough I said to him 'you can support anyone you want son but Man U' - and that stems from my deepseated hatred of them from my time in N.I where the prods who kicked the shit out of me week in/week out were Man U and the taigs who I was mates with were Liverpool - so he picked Liverpool. Didn't bother me and he also has a huge love for Pools too, the first match he went to was Pools v someone when he was 4.

I enjoy watching Liverpool games with him and have taken him to 7 games so far 1 at Anfield.
And as I was saying to Dibbs the other day, when I was in the Liverpool end it felt weird, like I didn't belong and that I was a tourist. So much so that the fella next to me moved positions cos i wasn't singing.
The first second I stepped foot in the vic I knew I belonged there, its nothing to do with where you are born its a feeling, a passion.

Anyways almost done....Its only a game, not life or death, its something I really enjoy doing with my son watching Pools and Liverpool [and Marske and Guisborough  ], if it makes me a lesser person in someone elses mind then I really aren't going to lose sleep over it.

I just cannot understand it. Any person who supports another team not from their home town is a full on 'lovely lovely person' and foooking idiot. Don't they realise how sad they look. Maybe its just me, I just don't get it. I class myself of medium intelligence and I support my home town club.
These people must be thick as foook banghead

Reasoned debate, I suggested earlier that these people should be lined up and shot, I meant it as well.

It might be just me but out of the two I'd rather be called a 'lovely lovely person' and a fooking idiot any day of the week rather than be shot dead.
