I would love to see something like that in Hartlepool, but I don't think there's enough of a market for it.

When Fearnleys in Boro went that confirmed it for me.

Snapped up 30-odd 1960's obscure pop-psyche singles spent £55 in no time. In my element...

Does anyone thing theres room in Hartlepool for a PROPER Record Shop?? Say, on the Marina parade? My "idea" would be to stick the Jukeboxes in there and run a caff as well..sort of retro Diner thingy?

Jesus..dreaming again!

I agree with dying trade, but move with the times who the hell wants to listen to scratchy distorted vinyl when can have it better on cd or download, also these take up less space.

The internet has killed off record shops which is a shame. I don't even know if John The Con is still open.

I dont understand why not, its the same song but clearer. I agree vinyl is ok my made had a great player at uni with loads of old songs and some new like the guillemots etc.

I understand the need for vinyl if you want to mix as well

Forgetting the quality issue, there are collectors of vinyl (EAD being one) and some rare vinyl goes for a lot of money. It's the same with most 'old' items such as cars, motorbikes, toys, enamel signs, radios, juke boxes, books, there are collectors and they keep many small businesses running.
A lot of business is done on the net but a specialist shop with a Diner and some internet dealing in the background could work.

It would be a great place to go but without a strong online section you can't sell enough stuff to keep going. There is a good shop near us that sells a lot of represses, 180 gramme LPs etc as well as original pressings when they can get them and they seem to be doing alright. The bloke who runs it- Jean Le Conne- reckons they do 80% of their business on line. They don't have EAD's Yorkshire pudding talents though.

The company I work for does the till/stock control systems for a few independent music shops. They used to do Fopp's system before they went bust. In some parts of the country the indies are thriving cos there is still demand for them, but it tends to be in towns or cities with trendy affluent people living in them (Leamington, Brighton, parts of London etc).

I'd personally love it.

It wouldn't work here which is a crying shame as the people of this town only seem interested in pound shops.
Funny how we've never had a high street music chain (HMV, Virgin, Our Price etc) or an established bookshop (Waterstones, Borders etc). We have to make do with The Works (even that closed and they were practically giving stuff away) and my nearest music outlets are WH Smith, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda.

It's a shyte sarnie minus the bread!

We did have Music Zone though (previously Solid Sounds). Also we had another local shop - Hit Parade a few years back.

Where are they now?

That's the whole reason why it wouldn't work. Not enough interest unfortunately.

I liked them shops though.

The quality is better on well maintained vinyl, it's a physical representation of the sound that was being played at the time. It is the exact acoustic replica.

CD's and MP3's are what a machine thinks another machine thought the sound was like.

I agree if the vinyl is dusty and scratched then it sounds awful but CD's and certainly MP3's are nowhere near the quality.

Putting it as basic as possible MP3 is Digital therefore its 0 or 1 in lamens terms its OFF or ON there's feck all in between. Vinyl plays everything in between, granted if you play your vinyl on a crappy machine its not gonna sound too good but if you have even a reasonable set up on a good quality vinyl its going to leave any digital reproduction for dead. FACT!!!!

Mr Ain't Dead, it's a lovely idea but I'd recommend you set it up in your garage and assess how many afficionado's and potential customers you have first. maybe start with some 'vinyl evenings' and maybe some jukebox sales.

Don't rush into business in the fog of nostalgia and the assumption that there's a hundred EAD's out there who'll patronise your business all the time. Start as a one afternoon a week thing and build it from there.

I know, Grandma, egg, vacuum......

Stick ANY vinyl on one of these little beauties and you'll end up using your CD's as coasters.
Anyone who thinks digital is better than vinyl hasn't heard the full info thats available on an LP

MP3' s are definitely inferior to other mediums as they are condensed. A WAV file ie a song ripped off a CD is reduced to about a tenth of its size when converted to an mp3 so its bound to lose sound from either extreme.

Its not mp3's which killed off vinyl, its cd's.

Vinyl hasn't been killed. CD sales are dropping fast, MP3s are growing and vinyl is growing. It's been a niche market for years- I remember buying Jah Wobble Lps that were marked "audiophile edition" and came with no proper cover art. The record company knew they weren't a commercial competitor to CDs but they also knew that people who loved the music would pay the extra for a full, warm sound. Other people will buy vinyl because you can't DJ properly with digital formats. Vinyl is a growing niche now.

I buy all 3 formats but anything recorded before digital recording sounds better listened to on vinyl. Lots of fifties and sixties stuff is better in mono too- that's what the producers were expecting it to be heard in and it is the main reason why jukeboxes full of old 45s sound so good.

There is no room for anything out of the ordinary in provincial towns anymore, the internet and downloads have killed the record industry. Never say never though, if you go the extra two miles any businness can be made to work in my opinion. The days of record shops and football programme shops appear to be over though.
