On my wanderings around the town today, I was greeted by the sight of kids and students all dressed up for this event, it's now a sort of compulsory, must join in thing, alongside Children in Need. The thing is, on the one hand we have the traditional things such as nativity plays being kicked into touch, while the offspring events of celebs, fading rock stars and dim 'middle class comics' are feted to the heavens ... what next...? St Bono's Day and St Bobs Day.

Good cause...? if people want to give to charity, they can do just that, they can do what I do and set up a standing order, no problem, no fuss. I have little time for people who need to enticed by celebs to donate and I detest people who lap up praise for donating.
The celebs raise their profile as do the givers trebles all round ...what a pity other deserving charities aren't given the opportunity the BBC gives these people, that's what's unfair.

Yes but if you simply give to charity you don't get to wear a red nose!

Come on now Snozzer, think before you write!!

I have three direct debits, one set up by my daughter to the RSPCA for a fiver a month. I have one set up by my little boy for £3 a month to the NSPCC. I have one set up for SAMA 82 for £10 a month.

Charities do alright out of me and I refuse to be swayed by anyone rattling a bucket or a tin in front of me unless its November and he's wearing medals.

Oasis have just been a prime example of this, they sang their new single that is released on Monday (this was mentioned) they didn't even wear a Red Nose or fuck all, they just did the song.

You should be at least prepared to make yourself look a twat, that was just a blatant plug.

To be fair though PJ, only one guy was wearing a red nose and that was the guitarist from Franz Ferdinand.

I have a problem with the beneficiaries of comic relief. They say the money is "split" between children in Britain and children in Afirca. Surely, all the money should go towards needy children in Britain? There are tens of thousands of vulnerable and deprived children living in our own country who are in need of help. I would have no problem putting a few quid in a bucket if I knew it was directly benefitting British children. It doesn't sit comfortably that we try to sort out other country's problems before getting our own house in order ( the same can be said about spending millions to get involved in Iraq/Afghanistan etc).

Band Aid was fine. Africa was in famine and in desperate need of help. Everyone knew what they were donating to but comic relief is to help "children" but no one knows how your donation is split. And why do African children take priority over say other European children or South American children?

100% of the proceeds should go to helping British children and I'd be more than happy to donate.

Chunky I disconcur. About the "looking after our own" bit. Children don't get to choose their nationality.
People I know are one thing, but as for everyone else I can't differentiate between someone in need in Kingston-on-Hull or in Kingston, Jamaica.

I know where you are coming from but my point is that all donations to comic relief go into a pot and then someone (no idea who) decides where it should be divvied out. I would be a lot more comfortable if I knew my donations would go straight into a children's project in Devon for example.

What actually makes me uneasy is that we don't know for sure how much is ACTUALLY get to these projects, whever they are.

It is extremely difficult to get a grant from comic relief, many times more difficult than the National Lottery for instance. The jam is spread very thinly. These celebs who trek over to Africa would do a lot better if they used their influence to highlight the vast lack of money going in to help children in Britain from our own Government. Africa still ahve many thirld world countries and they do need help. Britain is supposed to be one of the world's leading nations yet far too many of our own children do not get the help that they need. That needs to be sorted.

I dont Agree with what you are saying as money going to help children whatever their nationality should be assest on need. Yes I agree that there are kids in Britain in need however I think a kid dying of malaria because he cant afford a mozzy net if a bit more in need than say a kid in devon who has a house over his head and want to do say a footballing course in the community
