No one is taking 'credit' but a couple of pissed up blokes in the RAFA club singing a song does not in any way prove that it was that action that transferred it onto the terraces. Ever heard of coincidence.

This is how it happened.

My Dad and his childhood mate Joe were on leave from the army in the summer of 69. They had time to spare and so popped into the nearest pub for a pint. Who should be in there but Rolf Harris seeking solace in a whiskey bottle as his career had gone t!ts up and he was finished. He asked my Dad for a story to cheer him up and so he told him about the times when they were little how him and Joe had played soldiers with brooms as pretend horses. He told him about the time Joe broke off the head of the broom and was left crying. “You can share my horse Joe” said my dad and Joe did. Joe then told Rolf that he hoped one day he could repay the favour.
My dad and Joe were shocked when the record came out at xmas and they started singing it at Pools after this as it was about them.

The rest as they say is history.

He also told him about the time he fell in the lily pond in the garden and frightened the wits out of his Mum and Dad but that’s another story.
