Mitts with a piece of string that goes up the sleeves to connect them together.

When I have kids I'm gonna make them wear them but make the string a few cms too short.

Seacoal in the 70's..... luxury...I used to make 1/6d a bag off me mam but it was a bit of a bugger when I fell in the sea that time in sub-zero tempratures and still got the 4/8d worth home...fit as a lop now like....not like today's young'uns.

"and remember the lemonade van you would run out with the empties and he gave you tupence for each one"

dear god you sound like you grew up in victorian times, the reason people had to do that back then as there was bugger all to go around, like when my grandad says that we used to leave our doors unlocked, a point i dont disagree with but who wants to nick a ration book?

todays "young`uns" will be saying the same thing to their kids about now, i bet you rolled your eyes about stories your grand parents told you
