me, Fetish Bob and Tax Paying Poolie were talking about this today. There are players happy to not play football and pick up more money for sitting in the stands, rather than go out on loan somewhere. What is the point of that? If they're only in the game for the money, then the game should move towards appearance-based salaries.

For fifty grand a week, I'd sit in the stand.

kin right - a very realistic keeper harper has been - couple of games here and there and still picking up a good wage and living locally-most named sub in premiershit history (at a guess)

and that's precisely why they shouldn't get it.
They should get it based on appearances, not as it is currently whereby they get extra for appearing!!!
I wish I got "appearance money" every time I went to work, and if I couldn't be arsed then I'd just get a guaranteed basic salary anyway!!!
Footballers haven't lived in the real world for years, but soon we may hopefully reach a point where a dose of reality will happen to them

Reality thought, whats that?

Lets say our eternal sub player on 50k a week, or lets get seriously low paid and assume he's on 20k. Now he has to take a 50% pay cut bcause of club economics. The poor sod then has to survive on 10k a week or half a mil a year. To put it into perspective; think about when your wages go in the bank each month - our credit crunch player now only gets £27k paid into his account each month after tax.

aye, and this is the problem. People like me can't relate to premiershit football because I refuse to accept it's right that they get given so much money.

But theres not many of them on 10k a week though, thats poverty for these people.

There are no end of people on 100k a week plus, at that level they are getting over a quarter of a million cash in the bank every month end! £270'000 every month after tax, think about that for a second.

Even 'senior' Pools players on £2000 a week are getting paid nearly £6000 a month in the bank. And they're doing a shit job!

Crazy.

it's a shame he could have probably been englands goalkeeper,if he had got the first team games he could have won quite a few caps

that's what we said about Harper as well - no ambition or desire to play the game, very sad and very wrong

You could look at it the other way and applaud his loyalty, I'm sure he's always competed for the number one spot he's just been up against one of the best keepers in the World for his place. He was willing to come to Pools on loan, when I'm sure if his attitude wasn't right he wouldn't have.

He's been at the same club for 16 years, a rarity in the modern day.

You can talk about ambition, but if over the 16 years he wasn't doing his job properly Newcastle would have got rid of him. If they had more professionals like him they wouldn't be in the state they are now.

No ambition! He has been the number two keeper at a Premiership club for ages, there's only 20 Premier league clubs in this country, you could say he's stayed at the top of the English game for his entire career, there's not many people in the world who can make a claim like that.

He could have left Newcastle and had a bad season somewhere, then before he knows it he's in the Championship and on his way down the career ladder.
