John Smith - Star + Shadow, Byker

All for different - some non-musical - reasons and a la chip, there'd be a different 3 tomorrow, but all give me goosebumps now just remembering them

when I saw Rage against the Machine at leeds festival they were fantastic and I still maintain they are the best band I've ever seen, even though I hardly ever listen to em...but my top 3 gigs that left a massive impresssion on me are thus.......:

Martin Carthy + Norma Waterson at Saltburn folk club, not only the best gig I ever put on but a wonderful night in my life.

Vic Chestnut at some place in London, supported by Lambchop. Had the privilege of meeting Vic before the gig and what an emotional night it was full of magnificent songs and music. Sad Peter Pan being the pinacle!

My number 1 though is Nick Cave at the Queens Hall in Edinburgh. Cave in an old church on a grand piano accompanied by Warren Ellis here and there on the vio-lin. Bloody superb, his opener of into my arms left me in tears!

notable mentions go to Arab Strap, Mercury Rev, Pavement, Blur, The Wedding Present and Benjamin Wetherill.

oh Jesus! and St.Vincent.......theres too many.....

3. The Inspiral Carpets - more than a dozen times - best was probably at the Apollo in Manchester when they wheeled out Shaun Ryder.

2. Soup Dragons supported by the Sultans of Ping FC at Boro town hall - my first ever gig.

1. Rolf Harris at South Shields sea front with Lord Smythe- Nearly 3 hours of pure Rolf gold. Quality!

Tough one this. I've seen so many gigs so it's hard to narrow it down! Here we go...

1) Jens Lekman at The Cluny in Newcastle. Superb in every sense of the world. I can not recommend this bloke highly enough either live or recorded. The man should be a worldwide star!
2) Morrissey at The Borough Hall. Brilliant for so many reasons. Moz playing on the headland where I grew up! Unreal. Can't wait for the next one.
3) The Chemical Brothers at the V Festival (Staffs) last year. Simply amazing tunes / visuals. Completely speechless afterwards. I'd seen them twice before and didn't expect them to be so amazing.

errr...
That Petrol Emotion, 1989 at the Suterranea, West London
I usually think of that as my best one.
Then possibly seeing the Pogues or Stiff Little Fingers up here in Newcastle when they were past their prime but because I had loved them so much, 2003 and 2000. I have seen both before but I cant really remember them
I'm doing more here but I dont care
The House of Love at the Royal ALbert Hall, 1991-ish
Primal Scream and The Orb at a very tacky nightclub in Leicester Square around 1990 when the bouncers searched you before and if you didnt have pills they wouldnt let you in.
Not Morrissey, not The Cure and not the Mary Chain and not the Stone Roses at Alexandra Palace in 89, though those all feel like they should have been.

Dick Gaughan - Whelan's, Dublin, 2005. Absolutely amazing and my love of folk music developed from their.

British Sea Power - Brudenell Social Club, Leeds, 2006. BSP are probably one of the best live bands around, mad from start to finish.

Christy Moore - The Sage, Gateshead, 2006. 2 and a half hours of brilliance, I went by myself which I'm not a great fan of but I was spellbound throughout.

Honourable mentions: Lee 'Scratch' Perry (for sheer weirdness), Death Cab For Cutie (I ended up falling in love with a girl I met that night, nice eh?) and Belle & Sebastian (my favourite band).
