I had my physio appointment at Dryburn Hospital 8am this morning.

After examination and admitting that I've ran every day since January 1st 2007,(today been day number 759) the physio diagnosed the problem as been tendonitis, an overuse injury and has given me the option of 5 to 6 ultrasound sessions...... but.... it would mean having to stop running whilst receiving the treatment [Oh noooo! I'd love to hit 1,000 days and I've races/handicaps/harrier leagues coming up] OR run through it using pain-killers and ice packs and run as much on soft surfaces as possible. I told him I'd think about it and let him know next week as I've made another appointment to see him next Wednesday 10:30am

Meanwhile my 759th day of running consisted of a 4 miler at threshold pace!

Advice welcome from any Bunkerite, runners/non runners.

Its a great achievement up to now Mr Smythe but look at this way if you get to 1000 and cause irrevocable damage so that you can't run again would it be worth it? Think about it?

Surely its far better to have a short time off now than a very long time off later..

1000 is along way off, any risk of long term/permanent injury if you don't stop?

What you need to do is take all your cleaning products and clean the inside of the car. And I'm talkin' fast, fast, fast. You need to go in the backseat, scoop up all those little pieces of brain and skull. Get it out of there. Wipe down the upholstery -- now when it comes to upholstery, it don't need to be spic and span, you don't need to eat off it. Give it a good once over. What you need to take care of are the really messy parts. The pools of blood that have collected, you gotta soak that shit up. But the windows are a different story. Them you really clean. Get the Windex, do a good job. Now Smythe, we need to raid your linen closet. I need blankets, I need comforters, I need quilts, I need bedspreads. The thicker the better, the darker the better. No whites, can't use 'em. We need to camouflage the interior of the car. We're gonna line the front seat and the backseat and the floor boards with quilts and blankets. If a cop stops us and starts stickin' his big snout in the car, the subterfuge won't last. But at a glance, the car will appear to be normal. Smythe: lead the way. Boys: get to work.

keep running Smythe, you are a long time dead, even if you have to stop sometime you will still have a hell of a record to look back on
and the dog needs the exercise

Surely at the age of 50 it's time to stop.

Yes, I know you're claiming not to have reached that milestone yet, but it was a public announcement, it's got to be true.

I've had this problem a number of times and it is painful. If I were you I would get the course of physio and relax for a while, your fitness level will not drop that much in a few weeks and you will feel all the better for it. Besides what will you do if your tendon ruptures possibly 6 months in plaster????

My other half says you've already decided what to do and are just looking for replies to back your decision up.

Yes, I know....I'll hit him for you, if you like?

Ask the doctor for more info - what would happen if you continued running? Could the damage become very serious in later life if you continue.

How do you feel in yourself - can you continue running and taking painkillers?

The decision ......... as they say ....... is yours!!! bbolt

Is this a case of obsession overcoming reason. You have set an arbitary target, your target, but take it from me, if you fook up your knee the fun will go out of it alright and possiblt permanently. Listen to what your body and nature is trying to tell you and forget man made targets.

Wow! Thanks folks! I'm overwhelmed by the response and differing pieces of advice, some more different from others Richard Head sctatchinghead

Trouble is I'm even more confused as to what to decide, although I think Grabec's other half is pretty close to the mark!

Will be out running at lunchtime though to complete day no.760

That is good advice I would say my lord. I read somewhere that advice is something you ask for when you know the answer but wish you didn't, and I think that is usually so true. You probably know the answer but might be struggling to accept it!

I will add that I had ITB tendon (something on the outside of my knee) problems once and it knacked! Couldn't run at all so if you are running through that much pain every day is it really worth it?! Would any kind of knee supports help? Or are there any sort of new-fangled stretching exercises you could do to ease it?

I imagine you'd be gutted to stop running, but at the end of the day there's much worse things that could happen. Saying that though I can see both sides and 1000 days would be a great achievement!

I guess I haven't helped at all but good luck whatever you decide!

What would Ron Hill do Smythe? He must have had injuries in his time, but still managed to run every day for the last 80 years, may be a slight over exaggeration, take advice from a running master.

Take some walk breaks during your training runs.

Runners and non-runners alike often believe that if you stop to walk during training or a race that you are not a real runner. Nothing is further from the truth!

By alternating walking and running during your training, there is virtually no limit to the distance you can cover. The benefits of short walk breaks when taken early and regularly include:

# Helps beginners to increase their endurance to 5K, 10K, or even a marathon in as little as six months
# Allows those who can run only 2 miles to increase their distance from 50% to 100%
# Reduces the chance of injury and over-training to virtually nil
# Helps your legs to keep their resiliency and bounce as resources are conserved

Funny you should suggest asking Ron Hill. On Wednesday I contacted my hero, the great one via e-mail (to be honest I was either expecting no response or a **** off you stalking freak) Anyway imagine my surprise this morning when there was a reply from Ron waiting in my inbox)

I take on board your suggestion of walking..... NEVER!!! However...as you rightly say distance running, in particular marathon running is all about time on your feet.

Anyway I must dash BP.... I'm about to check my stools

The advice wasn't mine Smythe, I lifted it straight off a Ron Hill advice site!!!

Sir Ron Hill's advice that slow running will help speed up the recovery sounds good to me.

Keep on running.
