DEVASTATING: Unemployment in Britain is already at record heights

By Gabriel Milland Political Correspondent LABOUR’S decision to allow more migrants into Britain when dole queues are at their longest in decades was branded “unbelievable” last night.

Former Labour minister Frank Field said that Gordon Brown could not be “taken seriously” on plans to safe-guard British jobs if ministers let in at least 130,000 non-EU jobseekers this year.

The total number of work permits due to be handed out is 30,000 higher than the number of jobs Mr Brown has promised to create as part of his “anti-recession” plan.

Mr Field’s devastating attack comes with unemployment standing at 1.84 million and forecast to hit two million within weeks – and as Mr Brown prepares to host a “jobs summit” in London today.

But Mr Field said the Prime Minister’s intentions were being “completely undermined” by his immigration policy.

He said: “I welcome the Prime Minister’s pledge to create 100,000 new jobs at a time when so many people are becoming unemployed.

“But the Prime Minister’s good intentions are completely undermined by his Government’s immigration policy. In one of the worst recessions in living memory, it is unbelievable that we allow non-EU economic immigrants to come to look for work, or to take up jobs for which British unemployed people have not had the chance to apply.”

In a letter to Mr Brown – also signed by his co-chairman of the Cross Party Group on Balanced Migration, Tory backbencher

Nicholas Soames – Mr Field writes that under Labour’s new points-based system, tens of thousands of “highly skilled” migrants from countries such as India are free to enter the UK to look for work.

And it is right they should be allowed after all its a free country.

That article doesn't give a single example of a 'British Job' going to a migrant.

I was served in the 99p shop (the one at the top of the ramp) yesterday, by a eastern european.
Just a thought, but how does it make ecconomic sense to move from Poland to Hartlepool to take a minimum wage position, how do they manage rent, council tax, water rates and tv licence, and then the cost of living on top?

The "Unemployment in Britain is already at record heights" kinda telegraphs the load of bollocks that is about to follow, don't you think?

Without out doubt but looking on the bright side all them thats been made redundant at Nissan we can replace with immigrants at lower wages with will help the economy in the long run.....

They can't, immigrants can't work MIGRANT workers can

Although I believe one of the few laws still in place means you can't re-employ people on a lower wage in a given time frame, could be wrong like.....

I've heard a lot of positive things anecdotally about Eastern Europeans being grafters etc. One of my mates is a warehouse manager and constantly had recruitment problems, until a couple of years ago when an employment agency started sending him Eastern Europeans to work there.

He said he has hardly any chew off them, so much so that when he needs a worker he insists they are Eastern European. They are punctual, hardly ever off sick, don't piss about, do whatever they are asked, don't stir the shit with colleagues, don't steal things, don't have tab breaks without asking and don't moan.

I know they can't all be perfect, but I've never heard anyone tell of them being lazy or troublesome.
