Definitely about 4,000 to Ipswich 1978. I was in a Hartlepool Mail picture of us all on the platform at the railway station about to board the FA Cup Special.
I was wearing a brand new leather bomber jacket that got nicked at the Eddie and the Hot Rods/Radio Stars/ Squeeze(!) gig at the Borough Hall.

In fact I think I saw some tw&t wearing it in the Pot House last week.

I thought we had a good following at both games but no idea of the numbers.

Did anyone go on the 'football Special' train to Aston Villa for the League Cup replay in the early 70's.......I know I was young at the time but it seemed to be the longest train I had ever seen.Straight from Hartlepool to Brum....I remember getting pelted with bricks at the station......... rage

had the pleasure of meeting sir bobby robson at a petrol station on the way back from an away game the season before last. as soon as we found out we were poolies he mentioned the cup game and the fantastic support we had that day. he really was a true gent posing for photos etc and talking about pools etc and wishing us well would have been there all night if his driver had not ushered him back to the motor.
as other people have said definetely 4000 at Ipswich man city was probably 1500-2000 but it was difficult to tell as we were scattered all over the ground some were even in the kippax.

The Villa game wasn't that around the time of the Birminham pub bombings?

I remember that, because I'd been working down there just before that match, visited the pubs, made me a bit ......'twitchy' for that match... even though it was the safest place to be really.

I went to the Ipswich game and remember the fact that we outsang them from start to finish. Not that hey actually sang at all. It was quite unreal in that they were one of the best teams in Europe at the time and yet they couldn't generate any enthusiasm from their own crowd. I didn't see any sign of crowd trouble, only lots of Ipswich kids carrying little footstools and flasks in with them. For some bizarre reason we were all asked to wear red scarves to distinguish us from the home fans. I was surprised at how many Poolies had red, white and black Sunderland scarves. Not me though, I had my little sisters red scarf - but I turned down the offer of the matching mittens!

I was at Maine Road with a car load of mates but to be honest I can't remember talking to a single other Poolie.

So there must have been about 5 there in all.

I was at the Aston Villa game on that train journey and yes it was at the time of the Birmingham bombings. If my memory serves me right we took a collection in aid of the victims on the way down. I think over £250.00 was raised a fair amount of money in those days. The round of applause we got from their fans for this gesture was fabulous.

I also went to the Manchester City game. what a dump Maine road was. It was the only place that I had ever seen to have a bouncer on the door of a pub in the day time and it was the 1970's. The match was one way traffic and a thrashing 6-0.

Does anyone remember the trip to Swansea on the "League Liner". Now that was a journey. Nothing worked and it was a bit of a night mare to say the least and we were beaten as well. Again train windows were smashed a trip I will remember for all the wrong reasons.
