That is an absolutely scandalous thing to say and your argumnet is totally unjustified.

Really? The country is broke and that we're chucking 12 Billion on a hop skip and jump jamboree beggars belief. Cancel it now and put the money into supporting real things like keeping people in jobs and homes.

I tell you what's all wrong. I have a couple of mates (Hartlepool lads) who live in Stratford a couple of minutes walk from the Olympic site and I was down a few weeks ago for the weekend (the stadium is recognisable already). I learned that 40% of the workforce are non British, I am far from a Daily Mail reader but surely this is all wrong when the construction industry in this country is struggling big time (in Hartlepool and all over). Surely this, probably the one of biggest ongoing projects in the country, should be a centre piece of British workmanship. We have thousands of capable tradesmen struggling yet the workforce building the London Olympics is nearly half foreign sctatchinghead

It's not even succeeding in creating as many jobs as it should be for British people.

Edlington all the way for me.

I dont watch the sport much but where did Hamiltons team mate finish??

It's not quite that simple in F1, team mates are rarely equal in terms of support, new parts, tyres, testttering times etc etc. Mind you Raikkonen is not as good as Hamilton but Hamilton is no better than quite a few drivers on the grid.

A British version of Michael Schumacher he ain't.

Hamilton is a creation of the McLaren marketing department. He is of a similar standard to Damon Hill in that he can drive a car quickly but some people are putting him in the Senna/Schumacher category which is just laughable.

He was outclassed last season and again several times this season by Alonso in a much slower car. He is a lesser driver than at least ten drivers on the grid but the media are building him up into a super driver. He simply isn't that and does not deserve the acclaim. My dog could win in a McLaren.

Hang on a minute MJ, there are stories behind the stats.

Mansell drove complete dogs at Lotus and only stayed there out of loyalty to Colin Chapman. Even so he managed to wring some speed out of the thing.

Then he went to Williams back in 85/86 ish as very much a support driver to Rosberg who was definitely number one driver once Rosberg had retired Mansell wiped the floor with his new team mate Nelson Piquet. Do you remember the Silverstone race when Mansell came from the back to destroy Piquet? Piquet's confidence never recovered. He also suffered a large number of engine failures that season but still would have won had his tyre not exploded.

Then onto Ferrari which was a complete dog of a car and the thing broke down every other race with engine or a dodgy gearbox nobody alive could have competed in that car. Even so he wrung every ounce of speed out of it. Then he goes back to Williams in 92 and won every race for the first five months.

Mansell was a miserable get no question in fact I had the honour of pissing him off a at Donington when he drove that touring car race that almost cost him his life when Tiff Needell took him out. I was on a work jolly and Mansell came in to do a Q&A's session. The previous week he had been done on the M5 at 130mph.

I said to him; "Nigel, you seem to be struggling a bit for straight line speed on the back straight (true) do you think you should have brought the Bentley? I hear thats a bit tasty in a straight line. This was met with guffaws around the hospitality tent but Mansell was not amused.

Nigel Mansell is one of the three best racing drivers these islands have ever produced - the other two being Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart. Lewis Hamilton has only ever driven the very best F1 car and managed to blow it once last year and but for a fluke would have blown it again this. Let him win the championship in say a Red Bull or a Williams, then we can talk about him being in the same league as Shumy, Mansell, Prost or Senna.

(incidentally, I used to be into F1 in a huge way until it got boring)

Two observations

1) Why the anti-Hamilton stuff? Not just for this award but in general? Sure he's a tax-dodging git, but so were/are Coulthard, Button, Mansell etc. What's the difference? confised

2) PoK, will you welcome to the board with this Team GB shite. This is what happens when you invite marketing wankers to apply branding to a sport. The Olympic competitors were a load of individuals competing for individual glory under the collective banner of Great Britain. Chris Hoy was competing as Person CH, nothing else.

Well, I'm sorry John, but that's what I believe at least should happen, otherwise what's the point of enetering under Team GB. Anyone who doesn't want to represent our country shouldn't deserve the honou, yes, HONOUR of representing us at the Olympics or any international event for that matter.

Do you know how embarassing that would be for us and for the country ?

By the way, something I thought of last night, the IOC gave Seb Coe in Singapore in 2005 a contract from the IOC for London to host the games. That's a LEGAL binding contract, if we were to back out now, the IOC would sue us surely - breach of contract.

Not only was the handing over the contract supposed to be viewed as an honour bestowed on the UK, we would be in a worse situation now then what we were in if we just carry on regardless.

That's not necessarily true: about 5 million people watched the Olympics this every day, and a further 1.1 million watched online video of British athletes in Beijing. Not that's pretty good considering most of the events were shown live during weekdays when most people were at work.

I care because I believe it's a matter of national importance: anything the involves the name of country and the colours of our flag, how our country is being represented to the rest of the world etc should have some importance.

Why?

Cos its boring, rubbish and has no entertainment value to me personally at all.

And unlike you, i have more important things to worry about.

Shall i tell the electric company i wont be paying the bill this month as Olympic fever has just overcome my body so much i've spent my money on a one way ticket to london to enjoy the games?

I have important things to worry about as well, but I think it's great that we have the opportunity to break from our work to see them try to fulfill their dreams, whatever they may be as they wear the famous GB vest.

Quite, I agree with the elecricity point to the extent of a) you could save money away from money meant to pay bills in order to go down there if you were that passionate enough or even b) watch it on the TV, but it's not the same.
