So Woolies closing down before the end of the month. Terrible news for the staff at the worst time of the year! I guess some of the staff in Hartlepool will have been there for years too ;(

Now the Hartlepool branch will probably turn into another pound shop, sheesh, another empty unit or discount store, our town centre is becoming useless.

Still it would be churlish not to visit and see if you can pick up some cheap toys for xmas pressies or a kettle for £2

I spent about £50 at the Portrack one last weekend- loads of stuff reduced that we'd been meaning to buy for ages so no buying for the sake of it either.

I wonder if I can get some cheap as pic n mix?

Anyone remember that old old old geezer who used to be the security guard on pic n mix?

He was like 90 and the skinniest man ever, I actually think he was dead and he was just the ghost of pic n mix past.

It's hardly a shock that Woolies are going bust. The layout of their stores has barely changed since the seventies. It's a dinosaur, hasn't moved with the times and has been badly managed for years.

Hopefully someone else will take over the stores and the staff will get kept on.

Woolies will not survive in it's current format for 2 reasons...

1. The internet, you can get everything you could want in woolies for less price and less hassle.

2. Asda, Tesco, Morrions have just got bigger and bigger.

You can get tv's, cd's, sweets, clothes etc, whilst you get your shopping, you don't need woolies anymore it's all under 1 roof.

Woolies would have more success being a specialist bondage store at the moment as at least the asda don't sell all that... yet.

I normally pop in a couple of times a week to get a drink or some sweets or summit, solely cos you can pay on your card so it saves me getting a tenner out, a sneaky 50p here n there i wont miss.

I will miss it for that, but it can't stay open just for me doing that I guess.

A once-a-week pump on the pick n mix would do for me.

they should do Frankie Vaughan instead then!!!
Apart from owt else, at least half that pick n mix got nicked or just plain eaten in full view by loads of 4/5 year olds, left next to the sweets while their chav parents went shoplifting.
I'm gonna miss doing that with our lass and the bairn.

Woolies is/was a poor shop and it wont be missed. As a kid it was brilliant as it was about the only place to get toys in the town.

I just hope it gets taken over by a decent company, not pound universe, pound planet, 99.9p shitstores et al.

Oh and no more friggin chemists, womens fashion shops etc. How about a decent clothes shop for blokes instead of officers club and burtons (both of which are shiit) Friggin Greenwoods is not far behind either of them

The rent on that size shop alone will be massive.

I can't see anyone being able to afford that.

Think of shops out of town, there isn't many as big as that, maybe that one in boro, over the road from kfc, bhs is it i dunno?

Could pools not build a new stadium there? We could then get greggs pasties at half time or pick and mix from wilkos!

thats not actually a bad shout, something like boarders at teesside park? Book SHop, Music Store, decent coffee shop or restaurant. but then again, with the amount of smack heads in the town (which is why many people dont go down) i doubt if anything will actuallly take off in MIddleton Grange.

Hasnt that big store at the bottom near primark closed down also?

they spent all that money sprucing up the centre, and the shops are crap!!!!! Where else but Hartlepool would that happen?
I must admit when you look at the punters walking about in there, I wouldn't set my business up in Hartlepool either.

Spot on Parmo!

I live away from the town so havent been to Middleton Grange for ages, It seems everytime I go the "characters" in there look more and more ropey!

Although similar comparisons, Is that where I live the shops are open till 8pm most evenings, Yet theres no bugger about as they've all gone to Metro Centre instead, That may also be a factor why our town lacks decent shops

I have heard that is closing for a revamp, dunno it is true though, either a revamp or a homeware store.

We had, The Works and Music Zone, I used both when I had the spare dosh. The shoppers of Hartlepool didn't put enough money in the till to keep these sort of stores viable.
We're lucky we've still got Smiths and Greenwoods :-o .
And how the fook is Holland & Barrett staying open, sctatchinghead
