Congratulations. That was the biggest pile of uninformed rubbish it has ever been my misfortune to read on the subject.

Yes it was a threat. A massive threat. It was pretty much the biggest weapons platform on the seas at the time. Had they parked that thing in Stanley harbour they could have bombarded us in San Carlos 80 miles away. We would undoubtedly have lost. As for its position when it was sunk; it had been weaving in and out of the TEZ for days but its overall direction was that of a pincer movement with their carried 'Venticinco de Mayo'. They were a massive threat to the carrier group.

The Peruvian plan... do me a favour! It was so biased it could have been written by Galtieri.

I don't believe Jones deserved the VC. I don't even think he deserved a medal other than the campaign medal. Jones completely lost the plot on that ridge. I know a couple of the lads who followed him up that hill and one thing I am certain of is that he was not shot in the back contrary to rumour.

2 Para on the other hand deserved the VC as a battalion no question. Goose Green although a pointless battle was won against all the odds and produced many heroes like Stevie Illingsworth and Dave Abols. The latter certainly deserved the VC but had to content himself with a DCM. H Jones VC...... nah.

OK I'll tell you how it was, the Belgrano was operating to the south of the total exclusion zone accompanied by destroyers. They were playing a game of cat and mouse by going into the zone then coming out and then re-entering repeatedly, it's all documented. Just because a vessel is sailing away from the direction of the action, is a total irrelevance inasmuch it can change direction in minutes, it was in the zone and as long as it's there it's a threat. The German battleship Bismark was sailing away from the action when it was sunk, but was sunk because it was a threat, it's called 'war', it's not a computer game or a case of 'no after you' ...you play to win in this game.
just because the Sun had a shit headline, don't let that cloud your judgement, no one who has the responsibility, enjoys or cheers when someone is killed in this manner, it's not like the pictures, it's not nice, but war's like that.

i don't recall you and me ever having any cross words, but that is an absolute sack of shyte. the argentinians gambled that we wouldn't attack them and sink the belgrano because it was heading away from our exclusion zone, and apologosts in this country are the ONLY people who use this as a stick to beat Thatcher/The Navy/any other nasty reactionary fookers they can think of. they even said themselves it was a legitimate attack. i'm just waiting for some 'lovely lovely person' to label the falklands an 'illegal war'. stupid fookin term. is there someone somewhere who rubber-stamps these things ?

fookin shyte.

That was lame and frankly unworthy of you.
I have never put myself up as a war hero. I can name you plenty from the Falklands and numerous other forgotten wars but given that I'm still breathing I don't qualify.

Maybe Jeremy Paxman should ask Diane Gould if she would have killed Hitler as a child, given the opportunity?

I was fuming watching that video. As Snowy said; yes it was pointing away but it had a big steering wheel and was definitely in a dangerous position. By the way, you can sail west and shoot Eastwards. I feel for the 323 Argies who perished on that bucket but they were sailing with bad intentions.

To be honest. Watching that video and reading other stuff has changed my opinion on the sinking and that of Maggie to an extent. I liked her hubby's reaction:

"After the show, Thatcher's husband Denis lashed out at the producer of the show in the entertainment suite, saying that his wife had been 'stitched up by bloody BBC poofs and Trots'."
Thatcher herself commented during the interview "I think it could only be in Britain that a prime minister was accused of sinking an enemy ship that was a danger to our navy, when my main motive was to protect the boys in our navy".

Good job you aren't a judge then .... "I didn't listen to his evidence because I cannot stand the man, therefore his opinion is irrelevant" German judge 1944 show trials, his name escapes me. YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO LISTEN TO BOTH VERSIONS OF EVENTS, OR YOU ARE AS PREDJUDICED AS THOSE YOU CONDEMN.... even if those people in question don't share your views.
