HARTLEPOOL, ENGLAND — More than 25 years after this cinema showed its last film, the final curtain may come down on the Odeon. Apart from a brief spell as Joe Pools / Caesars Palace, the Odeon has remained out of use, slowly decaying.

Now a report, commissioned by Hartlepool Borough Council has stated that there is no feasible re-use for the building or retention of its listed facade. The council is now looking at redevelopment of the site possibly for housing. A selection of photos showing the Odeon ‘then and now’ can be seen here.

If demolition goes ahead, it will leave only 1 original cinema building in the town, the former essoldo, located only a few minutes walk away. This is currently in use as Carlton Bingo.

another landmark to fall then? It's always a shame when it happens, but if it's going to stand there empty and nothing is ever going to be done about it, then it's inevitable really.

Interesting that The odeon, The Essoldo, The Gaumont and my all time favourite The Nogs have all gone by the board but the Victoria Ground and Hartlepool United are still there.

Odeaon ... Pffffah.

Mention the West End, The Rex, the Palladium (specially for monkey hangers) or even the Gaumont and now you're talking!!

It's a shame that nothing could be done with it. The town could do with a proper theatre/music venue too that would attract decent gigs and shows.

I guess it's had it's chance and it could be time to go.

Another good site for stuff about derelict landmarks is here...

Another great building left to go to ratsh!t.

looking at those circular features in that corridor which let the light down to the floor below, brought back memories of giving the old girl a lift home from when she worked there as a teacher.
How can a place like that become so wretched??

I bet its like the pied piper of hamlin when they pull it down, if its full of pigeons then its inevitable to be full of rats.

they pulled down Dalton Street, so now there's about 300 homeless pigeons. The rooftops around the shops in York Road and Park Road are now absolutely covered in pigeon shite. The council needs to take some responsibility for this and catch the bastards and neck them. Rentokil used to do it on our works site regularly, until we eventually put the netting on the buildings. That's not an option in the town, but trapping them and necking them (or at least the majority) needs to be done otherwise there could be health problems. If I caught anything directly related to pigeon shite, I would sue the arse off the council and no mistake.

The council must employ beast-like Seagulls to kill them, I once saw a seagull spear a pigeon on the grass area of the war memorial. It wasnt pretty.

it must have been the same one I watched wrecking a pigeon opposite the King Johns Tavern on a flat piece of roof (just above the Stagecoach offices).
Quite gory, but entertaining at the same time.
It never even saved me some, the greedy gull.
