Especially with tales like this about Mr Donovans time as a delivery driver:

Already, the 'carers'have taken to the 'barricades of understanding'.... in my usual slot of waiting Arthur Dalys twin sister in the car park, I had Radio 4 on as usual and they were talking to a very learned ladt psychologist, she thinks a punitive sentence isn't the way forward and that she'd like to see her and her daughter rebuilding their relationship.
That was followed by her 'friend' who had basically nowt to say about the crime or an opinion about the loving mother.. apparently she has to be able to walk the streets and she would be keeping her opinion to herself. Asked how long she'd been friends, she said she first made her acquaintance on the day the kid disappeared....

sometimes....just sometimes.....the do-gooders need to be taken to one side and told politely to keep out of the way, because their do-gooding is encouraging people to do things like this. After criminals think things through to the point of getting caught and what is likely to happen to them, because the do-gooders are going to be on their side, they decide it's worth going ahead with the crime in most cases.
If the punishment was a lot more severe, let's say the death sentence, watch crime fall like a stone. The thought processes would undergo a radical change, and a lot more would-be criminals would think, "f-uck that, it's not worth it."

I just watched a Panoroma special called "Mother of all crimes".
