pretty sure its nothing but a scare tactic, after all what could they send that would affect the dodgy box, but allow the normal boxes to work fine?

It's bollocks.

Boxes; both official and dodgy do not phone home like Sky boxes, the info is one way only. It's a scare tactic much the same as the channels they transmit that says you are using an illegal box.

They are definitely going in hard though.

well they have been doing it with hacked cable modems, so why couldnt they do it with a dodgy box? personally if it killed a dodgybox then it would kill a legit VM box aswell

aye but that wouldn't be many subscribers though would it??

You never know, they might resort to issuing new boxes to all their customers prior to kncking all the boxes, and tell them all to simply plug in their new ones when it happens.
Then again........ nah.

Is all this hassle really worth it?

New codes daily and all that mess on, just to save a few quid.

Think about it..........

A cable modem needs to send AND recieve. A digibox/dodgybox needs only to recieve.

Doesn't sound worth it to me. Loads of clart on just to save a couple of quid.

And not to mention the fact that it's illegal. Are you taking the fine and criminal record into account when they catch up with you all?

short of being granted access to everyone's house with a search warrant, they won't stop it. The price of satellite/cable tv packages is disgusting. Sky and Virgin are the middle men you HAVE to deal with, and they fleece you something rotten. Personally I'd like to see Sky dodgy boxes but apparently they're harder to decode, or put a chip in, for some reason.
Either way Sky are getting hit as well because nobody is gonna get a Sky subscription, when they can get a very reasonable package from the bloke in the pub!!

These boxes are becoming more and more prevalent. As they do so, the losses incurred by Sky, Virgin and the like mount up. As their losses on it mount up they'll put more effort into stopping it and will aim for a few high profile prosecutions to try and dissuade people from ripping them off.

And unless they find a way of trapping people actually using them then they're going to be hard pressed to find anyone to prosecute. They knock on my door they'll get a big welcome to the board.

The only fix they could do is to make it a two way signal. Once they've done that it makes the job knackered. Until that is someone comes up with a fix. Usually takes about 48 hours.

Is TV really that important in your lives?

If I REALLY want to watch something I go to the pub and spend the equivalent of a subscription on beer. Two for the price of one.

You call 55 quid (figures quoted) for three or four days' drinking a month cheap?

So this weekend Virgin have kept doing things that disrupt the dodgy boxes & you all kept losing your telly.
How come they dont keep doing all that carry on 7 days a week ?
If I was in charge at Virgin I would be changing codes or whatever regularly, especially at prominent times such as 5 minutes after kick off in every footy match,as soon as the bell rings in every decent fight etc
Can anyone explain why they dont ?

I think that's their new tactic. Like I said above, when there was only a few of these things kicking about it wasn't worth their time or effort. Now that about half the population are using them it becomes worth their while to fk them about.

Alternatively you may prefer the conspiracy theory, and say that it was the telly companies who put all these boxes out there in the first place whilst perpetuating the myth that they cannot be interfered with or traced. Once they've got enough people hooked on their product who previously thought that it wasn't worth buying they start to fk with the dodgy boxes and get loads more of subscribers to their channels than they otherwise would have.

I just find it strange that NTL know about them, they can fuck people about yet never seem to pick the prime opportunities to do it.

If they have it hasn't affected my telly. Mind you, I've updated the firmware so it changes codes instantaneously without any user input.
