STOKE boss Tony Pulis gave a distinctly guarded welcome to seeing his side paired with Hartlepool in the third round of the FA Cup this afternoon.

City travel to Teeside on the weekend of January 3 and 4 after the two teams were drawn out early on in today's draw. The wider footballing world will regard Stoke's trip as a potential banana skin as they square up to a Hartlepool outfit currently lying 12thin League One. And seconds after hearing the draw, Pulis admitted: "It's not the one you would take by choice because there's no doubt Hartlepool will fancy making a name for themselves.

"We'll have to be on our game from the off, otherwise it will be a very long afternoon up there. "We know it will be cold and unfriendly, I'd expect nothing less in the third round of the Cup, but we'll have to make sure we're ready for it. "I've got the utmost respect for their manager Danny Wilson and you know he'll put out a team that will be champing at the bit to get at us. "We'll do our homework before the game as we normally would, but obviously we've got one or two games to worry about before that one."

Stoke were last at Hartlepool in December 1992 for a 2-1 victory in what is now League One.

The pair have met only seven times in all, including one previous FA Cup tie in January 1954 when Stoke ran out 6-2 winners at the Victoria Ground.

Hartlepool is slightly north of Hudson Bay the home of the Polar Bear.

I was making my way to Ward Jackson park to cut a hole in the ice and do a bit of baby seal clubbing as you do in these Northern latitudes, when on the tundra near the Burn Valley, a fookin Polar Bear jumped out, so I harpooned it..etc,etc,etc,.....
