very interesting read. I hope it pays off for them, and they get the cash required to stabilise their democracy and begin to circulate the cash more evenly and effectively amongst the population. It will all go tits up if the islands submerge,like. Even if they are allowed to purchase foreign land, what is the bet that if it's somewhere like Sri Lanka, the Tamil rebels will target them? They would be better off on mainland India or Australia.
It would appear nobody's talking about possible sea defences at all, maybe it's not an option.

It's not an option. Too much coastline around not enough land and the wrong shaped ocean floor. It would be prohibitively expensive assuming it was even feasible.
Climate change is the cause of the danger but not the point of the post. The country seems to be taking a very sensible attitude. At no point do they blame the industrialised nations.

I have been lucky enough to go twice to different Maldive islands and it really is the most beautiful place imagineable, in fact the only place I have ever been to that looks as good as the brochures.
