the other night, I happened to see one of the senior players with his friend. Seeing him in the real world and in casual clothes I suddenly thought, he's just a young lad, one part of whose life is to try and win a game every Saturday.

For that, he and his team mates are vilified most games just for miskicking a ball; are torn to bits on message boards and are generally treated like commodities.

Then I thought, if I were him, I'd hate us.

some people obviously get their kicks from abusing players
that is what they have been taught to do and think it is their right to do so
dosen't matter if they are right or wrong in their criticism they do it for their own ends
most of them could not lace up a pair of boots yet they can tell at a glance who will be a great player and who wont until the next match and all that changes on a bad tackle or a well cleared header

we all get frustrated when it is not going right but are realistic enough to know that form can change over night then all the critics will tell you
i told you so

In fairness it goes with the territory. There's a million kids a year want to be footballers and fewer than 5000 registered players. It's a position of privilege and the general public hang their hopes and expectations on players and spend their money hoping for success. That's a big weight to carry and when it goes right they get lauded and celebrated and when it goes wrong they get slated and abused.

I have to say that the issue seems bigger at Hartlepool than anywhere else I know but I'd also have to say 'if you can't stand the heat......' There's a big queue. But of course they're only people in between games.

If someone shouts abuse at a match, it's usually on the spur of the moment in 90% of cases... only slightly more acceptable then repeatedly churning over the same debate and conjecture on the message boards...we're all tw*ts

I once remember my dad confronting a bloke on the Mill House Terrace after he had given Paul Thompson HELL for ninety minutes.
Funny thing was, once he started, about another three or four fellas joined in, telling this gadgie he was bang out of order!
I think most fans hate to hear that level of criticism (or downright bullying in some cases), but nowhere near as much as the player in question.

As one who has only this season, foregone the Town End for the Mill House Terrace. I can confirm that for every gobshite in the Mill, there's three in the Town End, particularly in the Mill House End of it. I moved to the other end for last season before I ruined me manners. Theres about ten old yakkers in there that stand and moan their bollocks off for the full match.

I agree that its does no good to constantly slag players but its always been that way since as long as I've been going to pools.
The better players and the bigger men rise above it.
I've heard far worse at the likes of west ham

The better players may 'rise above it', but generally they fook of before it drags them down

Point in case Paul Baker, he got 92 goals in 279 matches but got a dogs abuse, why?, I'll never fathom it, but once he left someone else came along, a young lad by the name of Steve Howard for example
They are small minded pricks, to a man

i dont think discussing the relative merits of a player during a game is unacceptable. i dont think one off genuine spur of the moment stuff is unnacceptable either, though i dont think it helps. i dont find stuff thats funny unnacceptable. i once heard a bloke shout from the mill house at harry wilson during the warm up " fookin awful ball wilson" and while im sure wilson wasnt overjoyed it was clearly a joke.

i think what myself, elvis and one or two others are peeved at is the small minority in the mill house who single out pools players for a torrent of abuse. i was in the mill house seats for the donny game and this small group of clowns were on michael maidens back throughout the whole of the first 45 minutes and it started before he even kicked a ball. one guy yelled these comments in the first 10 minutes:

" maidens yr fookin shite"

" welcome to the board maidens yr fookin shite."

" theres fook all wrong with you porter you soft c*** "

this despite their being young kids present.

at the games with small crowds players must be able to hear this. while i accept michael maidens did not play well in this game the kid was probably suicidal afterwards and hasnt been near the first team since. whatever his merits as a player he seems a really decent kid ( unlike say, istead, who was a right little arrogant tw@t) who really didnt deserve the abuse he took.

id like to think he would bounce back from the night in question but i have my doubts. what pleasure these morons take from their actions is utterly utterly beyond me, and i congratulute the great man for confronting them.
I never abuse or shout anything at Pools players no matter how much they piss me off... what's the point? If they're having a nightmare, abusing them aint gonna improve things are they. NOW REFEREES ARE A DIFFERENT MATTER
