While we where at work last week we were getting buzzed by bee's and wasp's all morning when my mate said "im fooking sick of this, i dont mind bee's coz you get honey from them but what do wasps do"

At that the young lad who works with us said " they make marmalade dont they"

Another time we where all talking and Hitler got mentioned and the two young lads said "who is he"

We couldnt believe they hadnt heard of him and started asking if they had heard of other historical people, they just sat shaking there head

I said to them "for fooks sake you must have heard of Churchill" when one of there faces lit up and said " Ohhhh Yes "

The majority of younger people can name every contestant in Big Brother and give you an in depth background rundown of their lives, but are totally ignorant of the facts that shaped their world... we jokingly asked a certain holder of an 'o' level in geography what the capital of Belgium was ... "WE DON'T DO STUFF LIKE THAT" ......
Should we blame the kids or the standards of teaching ... it's no good spending billions on shiney 'academies' if the kids who went to a Victorian built school in the 1940's came out with a better basic education.

ffs i went to school in the 70s and there were 16 year old kids who couldnt even write their own name.

what good is knowing what the capital city of uganda is ffs ? its not ever going to be of any use to you is it ?
...what's the use of knowing anything if we apply your logiic,..? ...as for 16 year olds not being able to write their names in the 70's, now they can't type them.

But surely that would just prove their lack of intellect?

i just dont buy into this " we got a proper education in the olden days compared to kids these days"

firstly there have always been thick kids.

secondly i dont understand why someone needs to know the capital city of belgium to be able to pass a level geography for instance. i got an a grade for my o level geography and we didnt do capital cities. we learnt how to read maps and how landscapes evolved over time.

i dont know what the capital city of moldova is, but id recognise a drumlin if i saw one.

id defy any of the critics of modern education to answer the questions my daughter was pondering on her a level maths course last week. i got a headache just looking at them.

Very well said Mr Fireball! As a trainee teacher you're always going to have kids who can't even grasp the most basic of concepts or general knowledge of a subject without constant help, either because they can't be arsed or don't have the capacity to fully understand. This is by no means a recent development. The introduction of Learning Support Assistants is doing a lot to alleviate this, whereas 30 years ago they'd have been given a crossword and left to fend for themselves. Merely knowing who Hitler was isn't an indicator of a good education; knowing the context, significance and time frame in which Hitler can be placed in is.

I can't believe nobody has heard of Edward Elizabeth Hitler. He supports QPR as well.
