Just a quick note to say I've spotted that the young wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Carla Bruni, will be performing tracks from her new album "Comme si de rien n'etait" on Later...with Jools Holland on BBC Two tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10pm.
Apparantly a couple of her tracks reference her famous husband.
She writes in English and French so if I like what she performs, I might download the album from somewhere.

She can't sing, she tries to play a guitar she doesn't know how to play, she has no personality, her songs are shite, but apart from that she's brilliant.

Hang on, have you even heard her before Mr Head ?

I haven't mind, but I'm reserving judgement until tonight.

Isn't that what makes her attractive ?

You think she's old, she's 40, that's actually still quite young compared to Madonna and Kylie but some people thinks she looks like Jackie Kennedy in that outfit she wore to visit Britain.

Well, I didn't actually know that (you're not Montpoolier, are you?).

But have you listened to / bought this new album she's released from the internet, FNAC or what?

Now there's an interesting question.

She had no talent 3/4 years ago when she first tried this music lark and I doubt she's developed any since.

But the French adore amorphous singers so she goes down really well there.

Surely she's only doing it beacuse actually she has no official duties as First Lady of France.

You wouldn't get Mrs Sarah Brown doing this sort of thing.

Just as expected: typically appalling French arrangements in the backing track, whispering instead of singing to hide her tone deafness ... but I guess at least she's spared us the guitar this time round.

She really is crap. Totally. The French love her.

Cheers for the link, bluemonkey. Really appreciate it.

I persoanlly would like to see more French music promoted over here for a change - I think there's too much global domination by the US/UK etc.

It's not a case that necesaarily all French music we see is going to be crap, it's just we never get the chance to here it and judge for ourself.

No, no, it really is crap. They're still glassy eyed over Jonny Halliday. I've DJ'd in France and it really is truly awful. Try listening to some French radio on the net and see what you think.

If you want to check another country's music for unfound gems, try Australia. They have a wonderful radio station called Triple J.

This was the real hidden gem of last year's Eurosong Contest, the best entry Frecnch have had in years, classy, catchy and eccentric, by Sebastian Tellier, who has worked with Daft Punk:

The French complained this year because it was the first time their entry was sung in English.

But I often check the French charts when I can and nearly all of it is British/ American stuff. It's the same in Germany.

Also I think if you are going to write a POP(ular) song, English does sound the best language for it to be in. That's why a lot of French acts write in English.

The only album by anyone French that I have ever owned was by a group called Shakin Street, fronted by a stunning model called Fabienne Shine, try and find the track solid as a rock.

You can take that statement a step further PoK. If you are going to write a pop song make sure you are from a country with a pop culture.
We don't do good perfume and food. They don't do good pop.

French music is fantastic as long as it SOUNDS like French music, but then it ain't pop any more.
Try listening to Charles Aznavour singing French songs then trying to sing English songs and you'll see what I mean.

What about them? They're great and they sound really French. That only proves my point dunnit?

Sorry, but for me that's just repetitive shite in any language. Anyway there aren't any words are there?

No I totally agree, Mr Head, they've struggled like us in the Eurosong and they haven't won it since 1977 - that's 32 YEARS !!!! There's virtually little interest in the contest in France, unlike here, because they haven't for so long, but it doesn't mean to say that there music's bad.

Alphabeat are originally Danish, write in English, but they write POP songs. They are popular enough to represent the Denmark next year.

Dario G - Carnaval de Paris is repetitive, European sounding and must be good, it is good, Pools have played before enetering out to the pitch at every home game for some years now.

The French also do have an enirely different culture to us as well, which makes it diffciult. The bulk of British music lovers like to go Clubs with R&B music etc.

In France of course, don't forget they don't to clubs for nights out they go to les discotheques , where most of their music has historrically best-based disco music, Eurodisco, Europop, Eurodance, although like all countries they are getting more interested in the "student band" scene.

Congratulations. I don't know how you found that station but I agree it beats the livin' shite out of any British music station. It's part of Radio France, so no adverts, no talk, just music.
Sometimes their selections are a bit dodgy, but on the whole far superior to anything the BBC has ever offered.

I think the songs that they have on that Jools Holland programme are an acquired taste, especially the type of love songs that Carla Bruni sings.

And anyway, I dont care what you say, you can't beat a bit of Engelbert Humperdinck !

This all I need to see. PHOR !!!:

Congratulations. I don't know how you found that station but I agree it beats the livin' shite out of any British music station. It's part of Radio France, so no adverts, no talk, just music.
Sometimes their selections are a bit dodgy, but on the whole far superior to anything the BBC has ever offered.

I completely agree - what I don't understand is what their boundaries are, given that I've heard anything from classical to hip-hop to what sounded like music from Poirot.

You're right though, there is the occasional bit of chat but it's in French by some sexy-voiced woman so it makes me smile.

Is there any others you'd recommend?

Depending on your taste you might try Nova (all sorts of modern stuff) or Oui FM (rock) if you can find them, but neither are a patch on FIP.
FIP doesn't seem to have any boundaries, although they play very little pure pop.
My only complaint is they like jazz far too much.
