Any adult, no matter what age, who has sex with a minor is breaking the law and should be dealt with accordingly. I don't care whether he is eighteen or eighty......he is guilty.
There is a brilliant solution available to deter adults from molesting children ( I think someone on this board suggested it) and that is, put them in a room for an hour with twenty young Mums. You wouldn't need to place them on a child protection register, you could get rid of what's left with a hosepipe.

On the Thailand thing, their Government takes a very laissez-faire attitude to sex tourism purely for the revenue which is massive and the moral code there is somewhat relaxed. It's not unusual to be offered someone's kid by the parents themselves and the pretty boys in their early teens or even younger are groomed for sex change operations. Let's be honest if it's not for sale you can't buy it so maybe there ought to be more international pressure on them to clean up their backyard. Still, as ever, you're squeezing a balloon and it'll emerge somewhere else. There's a reason Gary Glitter went to Vietnam and if he hadn't been so blatant about it he'd still be at it.

OK, to make things clear to start with I am absolutely not defending anyone who indulges in sexual relations with children.

But there's a lot more required to solve the problem than jailing and castrating ageing rock stars. Kev is the only person in this thread who's even hinted at the source of the problem.
Now it just so happens that I do translations for a NGO that is actively involved in curing child exploitation problems at their source, and I am therefore VERY well briefed on the subject. Every single dossier they submit to the EU and other organisations for fund raising passes through my hands, and we're talking about major projects.

To cut a long story short, if a family's only revenue comes from prostituting their kids, then to stop them doing it you have to give them another way of earning a living. Then you have to rehabilitate the kids who've been abused. THIS CAN BE DONE, but there are a whole lot of social and cultural issues involved. And laying down the infrastructure is not something that can be done overnight.
You should also know that in many countries the demand for children for sex, and this involves boys as well as girls, comes not from tourism but from within the country itself. In some ways, tourists are a lot easier "prey" for poor families.
If anyone wants to instruct themselves seriously on this subject rather than joining in the general brouhaha, which will do absolutely nothing to tackle the real problem, let me know and I'll send you a copy of some of the stuff I've had to deal with, though I'm warning you it's not easy reading.

I take that as an admission you're not prepared to study the subject in any depth. The prostitution of children existed well before tourism became affordable. Now it has, parents would rather hire their kids to a European pervert for a day and get them back in a relatively intact state than sell them into a life of slavery. No of course that doesn't mean the child comes out unscathed. And no of course that doesn't excuse the client, and I wholly subscribe to the view that crimes deserve punishment, but punishing the client ain't going to make the problem go away.
Now I'm not referring to you when I say what follows -- like myself, I know you often play devil's advocate -- but some people on here seem to think that slowly dismembering Gary Glitter in public will put everything to rights. It won't. It will alleviate their thirst for vengeance until another public figure does something reprehensible, at which point all those poor Asian kids will be forgotten.

The Gary Glitter thing is hilarious - the descriptions by news outlets make out that paedophile was his job title, which I thought was genius. Still, the only thing funnier was him feigning a heart attack which he apparently recovered from within the hour.

The man's already hated enough as it is. People hunting him down won't help anything - it'll only make the lynch mobs feel better, who are usually inherently violent and just need an excuse to take it out on someone.

He did do some great (of their time) songs though.

Oddly, despite what some people on this board think, I have not advocated as much as beating glitter with a balloon on a stick..as far as I'm concerned, shunning him and keeping a check on him would do for me. As for the problem with 'parents' in these countries encouraging such repulsive behaviour, sadly it's a culture thing with them , why do we expect our values to be the accepted norm around the world, so to counter this, we have to act were we can to reduce the 'sexual footprint' of predatory individuals from this country. Stopping such vile practices will never be 100% effective, but we can have an impact on it by reducing access.
Like I've said before, these predators are prepared to go to extremes to satisfy their needs, both finanacially and time wise, we as a society should be disrupting this vile behaviour.

What I will say is that in this thread not one contributor has demonstrated his good faith by expressing even the slightest hint of concern over the fate of the children involved. Were they taken and rehabilitated? Or did they suffer countless other indignities while Mr Glitter had his feet up in a Vietnam prison?
Lust for vengeance and concern for the children's welfare appear to be two entirely independent things.

Preach to me about Glitter after you've asked me what happened to the kids (that's a general comment directed at everybody).
