Pools Finish Pre Season With A Win
Posted on: Sat 02 Aug 2008

Pools were comfortable winners over Rotherham United in their final pre season friendly with the 3-2 scoreline not really doing justice to their domination of the game.

Danny Wilson's men were sharply out of the blocks and created more chances in the opening ten minutes than they did in the entire game against York City in midweek.

Andy Monkhouse drilled a dangerous ball across the box to which nobody could apply the finishing touch, while Joel Porter stung goalkeeper Andy Warrington's palms with a crisply-struck volley from twelve yards.

James Brown could have scored when clean through on goal but a well-timed challenge from Pablo Mills saved the Millers, while the Pools striker also came close when he turned neatly in the box but fired just over.

Brown tested Warrington again with a low shot which was turned round the post before the goal finally arrived on twenty-five minutes.

Monkhouse fed a short ball in to Foley on the left side of the penalty area and the youngster dropped a shoulder on Rotherham defender Ian Sharps who put in a clumsy challenge to send Foley tumbling.

Joel Porter did the business from the spot despite Warrington getting a hand to the striker's kick.

However, the Millers grabbed an unlikely equaliser just four minutes later when a lovely through ball from Jamie Green freed Ryan Taylor inside the area. Arran Lee-Barrett did well to block the striker's first effort but Taylor reacted quickly to bundle the rebound over the line.

Lee-Barrett also showed good reflexes to keep out Taylor moments later after the lively forward moved on to Danny Harrison delivery only to see the Pools keeper divert it over with his feet.

It looked as though the teams would go in level at the break but then Foley whipped in a superb cross from the right wing and Ben Clark arrived at the back post to guide the ball back across goal and in to the net.

Pools almost got the perfect start to the second half when Brown's fierce shot from the edge of the box was palmed in the path of Porter who converted only to be flagged offside.

Instead, the visitors had to wait until midway through the second period to increase their lead when Foley's ball across from the left caused chaos in the Millers defence and Brown kept his nerve among the scrambling to fire home high in to the net.

Foley had a couple of good chances to get on the scoresheet himself but drilled one effort wide after a lively burst through the middle, and then fired straight at Warrington after a neat ball through by substitute Jamie McCunnie.

Rotherham then launched a rare counter-attack when a great ball was swung out to full-back Mark Lynch. His cross in to the box was fired at goal by substitute Jamie Yates and was well-saved by Lee-Barrett only for the Millers striker to bundle the rebound over the line.

Foley then stung the hands of Warrington from the edge of the box after being teed up by new arrival Matty Robson.

It was the last clear chance of an entertaining game which Pools really deserved to have won by more - but in the end Danny Wilson will be satisfied to go in to the new season on the back of a victory.

Full Time: Rotherham United 2 Pools 3

Rotherham United: Warrington, Lynch, Harrison (Holmes 81), Sharps, Burchill (Joseph 46), Hudson, Rhodes (Tonge 89), Green, Taylor, Reid (Yates 67), Mills.

Probably mainly a Reserve team.

From that starting line up, are we to presume Liddle started at right back? Put Collins in for Nelson and Power in for Jones and id settle for that in a weeks time.

Nelson did all right today. There again so did Collins. Nothing to choose between them really.
As for Power or Jones, our number 16 looked better than either of them. Apparently, according to the mail it was Jamie McCunnie, though from the distance we were at it could have been Marylin Monroe for all we knew.

Mccunnie and Boland in the middle? Need an attackin midfielder with Boland in my opinion and Power looks to fit the bill.

"Rotherham defender Ian Sharps who put in a clumsy challenge to send Foley tumbling."

Why does Ian Sharps name ring a bell? Was it him who missed the key penalty vs Tranmere a few years back?

Yes and who kicked a ball at Eifion's face when he was injured rather than kicking it off. And who got sent off for catching the ball and in mid air in the thingy cup.

While we are talking about players of yesteryear, who is the monkhouse fella who played for us today? Surely he cannot be that monkhouse lad who used to play for us and created/scored lots of goals but then got dropped by danny Wilson for not being as good as Robson and Foley? sctatchinghead

It doesn't matter how many times Mad John quotes the figures to prove Wilson didn't do anything of the sort, people still keep trying to make a point which ... well ... isn't a point.
He was certainly given his chance today and I'd say he made quite a good job of it. I see no reason for him not to start next Saturday. Robson did nowt of any note today, but there again he wasn't on that long, and rightly so because Monky did nothing to deserve being pulled off any earlier.

Would Danny have offered to pull him off? Pity Tommy Butler wasnt still at the club!

So is criticising the managers team selection before the season has started & before he has picked a team but that has never stopped anyone

Just going on today's efforts..............our best wide man today was Foley. It was he who was creating the opportunities and could have been on the scoresheet. Monkhouse didn't do anything wrong today but he didn't stand out either. He certainly didn't go on any of his runs and didn't have any efforts on goal. He wasn't playing at full pace for me.
We have two major positional problems plus a couple of minor ones. We need a specialist right back and a goalie. Maybe Liddle will adequately solve the first but who is going to solve the second? Obviously the fact that Wilson was going to offer Soutar a deal says he also sees a goalie as a priority. I am surprised DW hasn't played the kid from Newcastle a bit more in the friendlies. He knows what Budtz and ALB can ( or can not ) do.

Spot on TickhillPoolie,

If we class Foley and Brown as strikers. We have no specialist right backs or right wingers and we have a keeper in Budtz who can't catch crosses (ALB is not as bad). We could have a problem if we come up agaist good right wingers who can cross so a specialist right back, goalie and even right winger is also a must for me.
