Nothing new Mr Muts, its happened since Bodaccia's time. I and pretty much every other ex Soldier/Marine/Serviceman/actor in 'officer and a gentleman' has been on the receiving end of it. Its part of the training but occasionally someone passes through a training establishment who has a hidden problem like heart or asthma and under extreme pressure like this they go pear shaped. In this case, he died because he took illegal drugs. Without the Ecstasy he would have been ok.

Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.
We use words like honor, code, loyalty...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent defending something. You use 'em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!

"Without the Ecstasy he would have been ok."

I'm not sure you can really know this for sure, can you? Surely it should be, without the ecstasy he might have been ok/he'd have had more chance of being ok.

You're not suggesting that because he'd taken ecstasy that he was by a very roundabout route responsible for his own death, are you?

Anyway Mr I, what's your answer to Mutt's question about what you think of beasting? Just because it's always gone on doesn't necessarily make it right. Or does it?

I agree with you Mr.EastLondon....on both points!!!! confised confised

It is still bang out of order!!!!

If you done that in a 'normal' workplace you'd be sued to the hilt and the company would be also for allowing it to happen....and rightly so!!!!

Sorry lads but pull up a sandbag and swing the light. I don't want to go all 'Uncle Albert' but I have to.

I honestly do not see any problem whatsoever with beasting sessions. The name gives it a sinister conotation but in reality its a individual or group PT session given as a punishment. Get down give me 20 and so on. Nobody stuffed poisoned rags in the guys mouth here.

The fact is that you cannot compare military life and discipline in every way to civilian jobs. As a welder you aren't going to be sent somewhere where you have to maintain discipline or people will die. Jack Nicholson was right in that respect; "every put your life in another mans hands, asked him to put his life in your?" You cannot introduce very aspect of health and safety to the Armed forces simply because it just ain't the same. There isn't another job where being put in harms way is the whole point of the job. These sorts of procedures, usually in basic training help to mould people into soldiers. This is not a 'code red' US style, its PT punishment.

Yes of course its sad and unfortunate that he died and questions should and have been asked of the PTI but its very probable that the ecstacy in his system allowed his body to fatally overheat. He was a trained and qualified soldier so he had been through much worse than this physically, thats why I maintain that he was capable of what he was being ordered to do. Other than special forces selection, I've never heard of any trained serviceman dying because of Phys. Lets not get the idea that it was a Deepcut style murder, it was a beasting session. I've had them myself many times and done them a few too.

You'll be pleased to know that the military community does not agree with me in its entirity, see here on

I thought "beasting" was spit roasting but with a compliant animal, such as a sheep, goat, llama, or ferret (for the more daring).

One that I remember was when a young Marine declared that he wanted to transfer to the Navy to become a Submariner, they padlocked him in a small metal locker turned the fire hose on full blast in the little air holes. After a little while they decided he was getting depth charged and started booting shit out of the locker.

The poor lad nearly drowned, changed his mind about his transfer and was still in the Marines when I left 14 years later.
