Hello Poolies,

wonder if you can help me - I am a PhD student at Aberdeen University and I'm writing a paper about the Hartlepool Monkey legend. I have just spoken to Alan Wilkinson who wrote the modern-version of the song, and he reckons it was a well-known story in his childhood, and dates back to when Ned Corvan wrote his version in the 1860s.

I am very interested to know how you react to being called 'Monkey-Hangers' and why it appears you have happily adopted the monkey as a mascot.

The conference I'm going to give this paper at is in Cardiff at the end of July - plenty jokes always about the Welsh! - anyway, I would really appreciate any comments you have about the story and the mascot (keep them clean if poss!)

best wishes
FJ

p.s. the fishing village of Boddam up here claims they were the original monkey-hangers!

Thanks to the people who have taken this request seriously and sent me helpful PMs. I don't expect people to be rude about students, my particular PhD involves interviewing people not reading stale books where you never learn the truth. I think universities have changed quite a bit in that respect.

Anyway - very impressed with folks' knowledge and you'll be hearing what happens when I give the paper in Cardiff at the end of the month.

best wishes
FJ

Sometimes I despair. The lass comes on here asking for help and she gets this lot in response. Well done PTBAP for giving her a sensible reply.

Very prim wasn't she. Gets on to a footy message board and then complains that she's being taken less than seriously. You would've thought if she's doing a Phd she might have had an inkling that would happen.

Maybe she should have a look at some of the topics that have been taken seriously to understand that she sounded a bit frivolous. Have a look at comments in the Tiffany thread.

I wonder what the Welsh will make of the 'plenty of Welsh jokes in Cardiff' and very nice she considers the bunker real people instead of stale old books. Does anyone else feel vaguely patronised.

Referring to the above quote, I start to believe the claims by the Daily Telegraph that academic standards aren't being maintained when someone who says they're about to teach post graduate students spells 'receive' as recieve. Are you sure you're not a gardener.
