I remember going into the Manhattan as an impressionable teenager, upstairs that went on for ever, an extortionate 'cover fee' and various Pools players turning the stairs into a spew glacier...the 'attraction' was the topless barmaids, a first for Hartlepool, I assume the 'cover fee' was to raise enough cash to pay for them to cover up....tits like bags of rice, 'modesty lighting' to numb the pain and the joy of impersonating a slalom skier renegotiating the return journey back down the spew lubricated stairs.

Was the Manhattan ever called the Carlton club? If not I went to a very similar place to the one Snowy's described. Also at an impressionable age - quite a disturbing experience at the time, me and my mate argued for ages about who would go to the bar - neither of us wanted to!

The bongo rough? sctatchinghead

There was certainly some dodgepots got in there but all the times i've ever been in there i've never once seen any chew. Most of the people in there tend to know each other and any disagreements were sorted out pretty quickly and amicably. Sort of an unwritten set of rules.

The Lantern Club was upstairs in the Labour Club at the bottom of Park Road. The greatest Hartlepool Stones tribute band The Haafta Daarks featuring my old school mate on lead guitar Alan Plaice (no fishy jokes please) wowed a lot of sixties kids especially when the the drummer learned how to play them. Seaton Carew legend Ken Tyzack had a lot to do with their development. To quote a phrase, the joint was rocking.

Agreed. I've only been once about 4 years ago but there wasn't one bit of trouble and there was only a 70year old man on the door. I didn't know what to expect when I went but it wasn't bad at all.
