Born in Bristol (9-10-1967) former England Youth International Tim began with Bristol Schoolboys and joined one of his hometown teams, Bristol Rovers as an apprentice. He made 53 outings for Rovers, before moving to Newport on loan in December 1987, where he made just the one outing. Later in the same month, £35,000 changed hands and he made the move north to Sunderland. He never really established himself at Roker Park and had loan spells at Carlisle (March 1988), Bristol City (September 1988) and Birmingham (November 1991). He was freed by Sunderland in the summer of 1992 and joined Pools. He never played until the following season and seemed unsettled and in January 1994 he moved to Millwall on loan, joining them permanently in March. He had figured in just a handful of games for Millwall when he moved to Oxford in August 1995. However, after nine starts there he returned to Millwall in the December, where he stayed for another season and a half as first choice. In this stint he made 68 starts, before he joined Conference champions Halifax in July 1998. After a few appearances for the Shaymen he quit the professional game and returned to Sunderland to be their Academy goalkeeping coach. He later took over the reins of first team coach and Tim also coaches the goalkeepers for the Estonian national side on a part-time basis. Sadly Tim recently passed away in June 2008 aged just 40.

Debut – 24-7-1993 v Newcastle United (H) Fr
Games – League 18, Cups 7, Fr 4; Total 29

Board rumour is light, but one suggests he took his own life which is pretty sad

when I got interviewed by the Bristol Rovers announcer before we played them in 93/94 season, he asked me how Carter was playing for Pools, as he was an obvious topic of conversation. Funny how you don't think about a thing like that until a time like this. Very sad.

Ex-Sunderland keeper found dead

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Tim Carter has been found dead in Manchester.

"The body of the 40-year-old, from County Durham, was discovered in bushes by a passer-by in the Highfield Close area of Stretford, Greater Manchester.

Emergency services were called, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at midday on Friday.

The death of Mr Carter, recently appointed as Sunderland Academy goalkeeping coach, is not being treated as suspicious, according to police.

He played 50 games for the Black Cats, between 1987 and 1992, and had been the first-team goalkeeping coach before the arrival of Raimond Van Der Gouw in summer 2007.

Mr Carter also coached the goalkeepers in Estonia's national side on a part-time basis.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said a post-mortem would be carried out in due course."
