How about

A melange of freshly harvested garden grown leeks and succulent celery hearts, pan-fried to tenderness, subtly enhanced with a carefully matured blue cheese from rural Shropshire, gently pureed and enriched with the finest cream from the milk of Jersey cows.

Crusty bread with thick butter!!!!!
The croutons would be nice.

Is your cordon bleu family descended from the family who used to have the fish shop at the corner of Derwent St and Young St. I believe it was called Rafferty's or something like that?

I reckon Grabby could win the contract for match day catering. Certainly wouldn't mind some of her soup at half time!

Yes, if anyone at HUFC is listening, I need a job and I have an infinite number of recipes for half-time broths.
I never use commercial sauces or anything like that, tho...so you lot wouldn't like them

Was a good chippy that.

My Dad was a shipwright. Served his time at William Gray's.

Grabby, I suspect the mention of you providing "broth" could be mis-construed by certain members of this board.

I can't believe people remember the name Rafferty's! Unless it stayed in the family for donkey's decades after I left that part of town.

I remember it from the fifties, Richard. A real good chip shop. Can you remember the two corner shops across from it.............Parsons and Watsons I think. Both shops used to be packed on a Saturday morning before the chidren's show at the Odeon, then chips from Rafferty's afterwards. My uncle had a house in Derwent Street, a couple of doors from Parsons.

Yes. When the Co-op closed it became Rasul's. Then he burnt it down for the insurance.

Most definitely! Threepence for chips; there was a riot when they increased it to fourpence.

TickhillPoolie wrote:

I certainly can. I lived in Pease Street (aka Lynnfield Road) in the house that faced all the way up Derwent street.
Watson's was run by a couple with a combined age of about 160! He was deaf and she did all the work. I seem to remember there was a dog in there too, always asleep!
The other shop kept changing hands. I can't ever remember it being called Parsons though. It was certainly a lot more "modern" than Watsons! They used to sell avant-garde things like Bazooka Joes and frozen Jubblys, whereas the Watson's woman just looked at you like you were daft if you asked for anything that wasn't in the range she'd been selling for the last 100 years.
I seeme to remember Watson's also being called Mason's for some reason. sctatchinghead

That Co-op was more than just groceries; there was also a clothes shop and a shoe shop to name but two.
Anyone remember those big blocks of butter they used to serve you from?

Aye and the blue bags that they put the sugar in. That great long wire what they cut the cheese with.
