Hello fellow Poolies,

I'm moving to Leeds to start a new job soon (30th of this month) and I don't really know the area that well, apart from Headingley and the city centre. I'm looking for accommodation between Headingley and Leeds itself (young professional housing, not too studenty but cheap enough), and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or knowledge of the city to keep me in check for the first couple of months as I'm not going to have much money to my name!

I'm using www.spareroom.co.uk to sort out accommodation but if there's anywhere to avoid (I've been informed of South Leeds as a no-go) then let me know. I'm working right in the centre of Leeds on the Headrow and anywhere within 15-30 minutes would be grand.

Thanks in advance

Might be a bit further out than you want to be but I have a mate who currently lives in Roundhay and one of my other mates lived there too. Just off Street Lane. Quality area. Some great pubs. Accomodation not too pricey and reasonably easy to get into the city centre fairly quickly with buses etc.

Avoid Beeston and the areas around Elland Road like the plague, a right fooking shite hole and no mistake!

I'll definitely consider Roundhay, got myself a Leeds A to Z so I'll have a look about tomorrow. I figure though that if I spend £25 more than my budget to live closer to the city centre but in similar quality accommodation, it'll save me on bus/rail costs (especially as I work 8-5).

I'll definitely avoid Beeston Talbot - I have a friend from there and he's a right rough bastad  I think anywhere in South Leeds seems ropey though - Morley included

My friend who reads this boards lives in Hunslet which is in South Leeds. He is as rough as out and supports Leeds. He is one of those guys if you bumped into you'd run a mile. An absolute disgrace he is. Truely, truely, truely is. Disgusting. Needs to be locked up. (wonders if he'll read this)

Coming from Leeds, I was having of this and nearly every area has some rough spots.

I can tell you to defintley avoid Little London if your thinking of going near the centre like you said but I doubt your thick and will see it straight away.

As you know, not too studenty but cheap enough is hard to define these days.

Bad: Beeston, Gipton, Middleton, Seacroft, Scott Halls and Sholebrooks, Burmantofts and Chapel Town.

Little London is VERY BAD.

Morley is mixed

OK: parts of Chapel Allerton, parts of Headingley, parts of Moortown, parts of Rhounday such Oakwoods, parts of Kirkstall...

You'll be able to tell by looking.

Belle Isle is top - born and bred I was and I'm really cultured

Chapel Allerton is really good imo.

Obviously Roundhay/Moortown/Shadwell/Adel are excellent and Weetwood (my particular favourite) which is just one stop up from Headingly and all that the area has to offer the young man about town. Crossgates is also good - pop in and see my relatives, so too Whitkirk and Colton.

You would be wrong to write off the South - it's where proper Leeds folk come from (pits/heavy industry/rugby). Churwell is good for instance. Rothwell/Woodlesford and Oulton also really worth considering.

Don't know how much you can spare but the town centre is excellent - at least one poster on my usual board swears by his little apartment in the heart of the city.

I just hope you can cope with living in the second city! Yup, you are a lucky fella,

I haven't been there for a while but I'll second that. It's a 10/15 min bus ride from town and is served by quite a few buses etc etc.

Thanks guys, it's been a real help - if you have any other suggestions about life in Leeds generally then I'm all ears! I'll even buy contributors a pint in Leeds just to say thanks

My mate lived in Little London for a while and his lady got mugged. Besides that they loved it.

I like Leeds a lot, particularly going for a scoop along the Headrow and nearby streets and getting a later train home

Don't move to Leeds!! It's satan's town and no mistake. Twinned with Hades, I believe.

Full of nasty, bitter people with no sense of humour.

I beg to differ, some odd folk yes, but not rough like. easy to get to from most directions.
