Was it not stolen/recovered vehicles where they had no way of telling the chassis number or reg number?

Might have been a combination of both?

I thought a Q was an imported car.

I always understood that they were ex write-offs, and you probably don't see them as much because it's so cheap to get a new car now than salvage an old one (even if write-off means they're paying more than the car's value to recover it... I dunno sctatchinghead )

About 5 years + ago my car was technically written off by the insurance and they cashed me up on the basis of me keeping the car, which I got fixed up and put it back on the road. I didn't have to put a Q plate on it.

In 1983 Q marks were introduced. These are issued to vehicles of indeterminable age, e.g. kit cars which are built of major components from more than one donor vehicle, or imported vehicles where the date of first registration cannot be established.

Guess we were all half-right in a way

My Dad had one of those kit cars around 1980 if I remember rightly it was called a Dutton Sierra.
From Wikipedia
Quote:
In 1979 Dutton announced the Sierra, an estate car with off-road looks. The Sierra name was also planned to be used by Ford who claimed sole rights. A court case resulted and Dutton won the right to continue with the name on kit cars as the judge ruled that these were a separate category from assembled cars. Dutton was awarded costs against Ford and gained immense publicity. The Sierra is claimed to be the biggest selling kit car ever.
