i'm actually talking crap. it's the puppini sisters i'm going to see, and they are, by all accounts, worse than the pipettes. they sing all sorts of cover versions all in a 40s style. can't bloody wait.

Hey I never said I don't like Punk. There can be a certain attraction in its simplicity.
What I am saying is that the barrier to entry is so low that the genre is top heavy with lousy musicians.
And I'll admit that there are other genres where the barrier to entry is so high the guys feel compelled to try to drag a meaning out of their instruments that just isn't there. If there's one genre I definitely don't "get" its jazz for that very reason.

But that doesn't mean ALL pre-punk music is irrelevant. There are times, many of them, when you say "that phrase they just did there, it was GOOD" and it just gives you the shivers.
If you can't dig the sensations you get from hearing pure musical genius then you really are missing out on something.

aye I'll give em a chance, the sound is pleasant enough

The Pippettes are way sexier though.

anyone like more recent punk, stuff like NOFX or Lagwagon. that sort of stuff peaked in the mid 90's, I thought there were a few good albums came out of it.

Guitar solos: Last one in the pub music quiz last night was 'Highway Star' by Deep Purple. Now that's a good solo......

Problem with the Carpenters is that I keep returning to 'Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft' although anyone who rhymes 'interplanetary' and 'most extraordinary' must be OK I suppose.

I hope you haven't gone for the easy "best rhyme"? thread. Worst would be far better. For that, I nominate Europe's final countdown - to rhyme "Venus" with "see us"! Genius!!!

Amazing singer, who somehow managed to oscillate his act between crooning (Blue Melody), folk (Dolphins), white soul (Helpless), and in fact any genre he fancy turning his hand to. With a voice like his all kinds of music were a doddle.
My only regret is it took me more than 20 years after his death to discover him.

It's a shame that the album was so badly produced. It sounded like it had been recorded in an aircraft hanger.

Just burnt a CD for a mate. It's his selection not mine but it was pretty nice listening (well, mostly). And I guess if I had the music in the first place it must say a bit about my taste too.

Year of the Cat - Al Stewart
Mars Bringer of War from the Planets Suite
Nutbush City Limits long version - I & T T
This is a man's man's man's man's man's man's man's man's man's man's man's man's world - James Brown
Lux Aeterna - Khalil Chahine (who?)
This is not a Love Song - PIL
Hey Little Girl - Icehouse
American Woman - Guess Who
What I Am - Mrs Paul Simon
Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits
Video Killed the Radio Stars - Trevor Horn and friends

Does anyone know if Slade have done a studio version of the Loving Spoonful's Darling Be Home Soon?
All I've heard is a live version in which Noddy has a coughing fit!

I bought that Jeff Buckley album years ago but have only played it once. Didnt do much for me. Maybe I should revisit it. Preferred his dad as well.
My Jeep is knackered and I only really listen to music when driving or travelling.I was listening to this...
Image

Thankfully a mate has given me an ipod after getting himself a new one and finally, after about four months, I've got it sorted. So I got the bus and metro to work (one hour twenty instead of twenty minutes).
Put in on shuffle/random
Got this:
Town Called Malice - The Jam (steady on ECG)
Exodus (or the one that samples it) - Damien Jr Gong Marley
Psyshotherapy - The Ramones
Debaser - The Pixies
Roots Rock Reggae - Bob Marley
Domino - The Cramps
You rub me the wrong way - Road
Televison Adict - The Victims
Too Sickto Pray - Alabama 3

I like the random thing, not knowing whats coming next
After that I took it off, dont really like music in my ears, not being able to hear anybody else, makes me a bit paranoid, voices in my ears and all that, not hearing anything else.

Saw a good young band called The View recently, will be supporting Primal Scream next month too, better live than on record methinks.
Lead singer seeems like he has learning disabilities, tourettes and nits all at the same time.

I don't know why that label brands itself the home of US Punk with that particular playlist.
Some of those bands had already packed in before punk was even heard of.

Are they trying to give Punk a good name or what?

They say basically that they split because touring made them lose the plot. There's quite an interesting item about it one one of the guy's blogs.

Not really, The Seahorses were shite. If Squire got his head any further up his own arse it would be back on the top of his shoulders! An LP of noodling - pure musical onanism.

whoever said it - can't be arsed to quote it - but i have to reluctantly agree that the seahorses album was average at best - a coked up to the eyeballs squires taking on himself and the other three instead of knocking down some good licks - pity - after all I thought he would have went on from the second (greatly underrated) roses album and not backwards......still not my fookin problem.....

Maybe I caught 22-20s on a bad night,or maybe I expected too much from them, their name cropping up here made me get that album on today though & its still a damned fine album.
