the question is, why are people making such an over-exaggerated fuss about it.

Really, its not worth the rise in blood pressure.

Hodcroft is obviously trying to keep in with Shearer and probably in a roundabout way trying to keep in with Newcastle United, as long as it doest harm us then i see no problem.

I also can't see what all the fuss is about. All this hot air over a picture. It's Hodcroft's club and he can do ( and does ) exactly what he likes. Some people obviously haven't grasped that.
Maybe some good will come of it...............maybe it will remind Mr Hodcroft what a real centre forward looks like.
As for Mr B..............of course he is real............he just happens to have a different outlook on the situation than some of the rest of you. Opinion is varied my fellow esteemed posting fraternity.   violin violin violin yawn1 yawn1 yawn1

Yeah me too, I was looking for a "who the fook cares" option in the poll.

some of you seem to overlook the fact that shearer has nothing at all to do with newcastle - and this may not be a case of pools trying to forge links with newcastle.

shearer may be all receptive to the advances of pools to do this n that as pr and there is no doubting his legendary status in north east football - but newcastle are a different kettle of fish and are a business that will probably treat pools with as much disdain that tesco treat the corner shop.

personally i would have liked to have seen an ex-poolie open it - a true legend who did many more things elsewhere - i'm not talkking of the likes of chumphries or honour but people who did something career wise - linighan, hutchison, houchen, clegg.

I gotta agree with that. It's not as if
a) it's the only picture in the lounge and
b) it's not got some relevance (even if it's very tenuous).

Besides, Shearer's been coming to Pools games as a spectator for a while and played in his final season at the Vic, encouraging the Mags' manager (whoever it was at the time) to put a relatively decent team out against us. As much as it really isn't a great idea in terms of other picture opportunities available, it's a decent gesture and could help us in the future in one way or another.

Not that I know what it is, but Shearer's a well-liked bloke. It's not as if it's hurting.

He opened the lounge didn't he? There is a plaque below the picture saying this it's not just a big picture of Alan Shearer for no reason.

He's one of the best strikers to play for England isn't he?

What would peoples thoughts if say it was Gary Lineker who had opened the lounge? Is it the Newcastle thing? Actually if it was the boy Lineker he might have brought his new bird and that would have been alright.

I'm a little confused what the issue is? What if it was Sir Bobby Robson?

Would people be as up in arms if it was any of these or is it because some people don't like Shearer?

I think it's a pretty trivial thing to get so passionate about to be honest.

No I'm just interested to what peoples main issue is with this.

I have no real feelings on the matter, I'd pretend to be as pissed off as others but I'd be lying, I read the Echo this morning and thought nothing of it. What party line am I actually towing I've merely asked a few questions!?

I don't think anyone would want a picture of me in this fancy new lounge!

Or perhaps you meant Peter, that wonderful defender.

Personally I didn't vote, not really bothered by it.

How is it Hodcrofts club?.

He's only an employee like the rest. Isn't he?. IOR have been amazing for us and i'll always be grateful to them for what they've done for Pools, but Hodcroft refred I can't get away with him and never will.

Another nail in the Pools fans coffin

Mutters, you are obviously obsessed with this saga. Now if you want to know the ins and outs of why this incident has happened then go and see Mr Hodcroft. I am sure there is a perfectly good explanation for these events................in fact I know there is.
Take Snowy with you  . You can take your mutual hero, mr watty, with you as well.

Oh and in case you two have a conversation about Pol Pot.............we don't want his portrait up either............and mr pot didn't play footy...........snowy said. therethere therethere

I completely agree!

One painting out of a dozen or so that is dedicated to the club's first game and features one of the best local talents to ever grace the game.

Shearer likes Pools, so Pools should like Shearer - it's only fair.

Totally indifferent to it happening. It's just nice to see at least someone else not lash out at the club and risk being branded perpetually obedient

I agree with Mr Mutley on this one. Shearer's contribution to Newcastle is not relevent to HUFC.

PJ - If you went to St James Park, Newcastle would you expect to see a picture of Eric Cantona in a Man Utd strip on the wall or would that be daft?

That's a daft comparison though, it's not as if we are competitive rivals with Newcastle United is it? Newcastle and Man Utd compete on a similar level so that would never happen would it? Let's get real here.

He has no connection with Hartlepool United granted but 'celebrities' are often asked to open things when they have no connection to the organisation, The Queen for example

It's be completely daft.

Middlesbrough maybe - given that their first ever game was against Ironopolis, like ours was against Newcastle. That's where the relevance steps in.

Plus Newcastle have never been our rivals. I don't really see why Pools fans foster so much hatred for them. I don't support them and I don't feel happier if they've done well, but Shearer is a follower of Pools and it's the natural step to take given that there doesn't seem to be a single photo of that very first game (probably because cameras weren't exactly cheap or to hand back then).

So the Man Utd comment is, as a result, redundant

Mutley, you are obviously entitled to your opinion on this matter. I have not given an opinion on it one way or another. What I am suggesting is that Hodcroft has his reasons for what he did and that if you are so bothered about why it was done, then go and ask the man. I am suggesting to you that you then may have a different view on it.
For the record I neither agree or disagree with the hanging of that portrait in the Centenary lounge. I have no say in the matter so therefore am not going to lose sleep over it. I just can't understand why you seem so uptight about it, even to the point that you have to start accusing people of being other posters. If it bothers you that much then go and ask the question.

Look - I don't have anything against the mags or Shearer, he seems like a clever ish bloke and I know he comes to watch Pools on occasions BUT a picture of him in a Newcastle shirt does not belong anywhere at HUFC. How hard is that for people to understand...?

Look - I don't have anything against the mags or Shearer, he seems like a clever ish bloke and I know he comes to watch Pools on occasions BUT a picture of him in a Newcastle shirt does not belong anywhere at HUFC. How hard is that for people to understand...?

Yeah, but making completely redundant points isn't exactly helping your point of view

Yes you have and I have told you for months that I am not watty.
I have all the messages you sent me along with all the replies I sent to you. In those messages you stated that you would never divulge what you 'discovered', but you have divulged it haven't you? I have sent a message to Mr I to clear this up once and for all.
As for being an intelligent poster.....................I would class an intelligent poster as someone who has an opinion, states it and then respects other people's opinion. I would also expect that person to check all and any available information as to why the chairman of the football club acts or performs in any or every specific manner, which is all I am asking you do do.
Mr Hixon ( sorry for getting his name wrong earlier) gave the club a present. That present was subsequently hung on the wall in the Centenary lounge. THERE IS NOTHING WRITTEN IN STONE TO SAY IT IS GOING TO STAY THERE. I am not trying to be rude here Mutters, but why are you refusing to consider that?

So it would be ok for a painting of Alan Walsh in a Darlo shirt to be on the wall in the lounge seen as he doesn't play for anyone now either???? sctatchinghead
