If these rumours circulating on here are confirmed with white smoke from Pools' chimney, so to speak, I believe it would be disatrous if Danny Wilson left Hartlepool.

Granted, we have not had a good season...we have had THE MOST FRUSTRATING SEASON IN MODERN TIMES. That is not a reason why we should let go of a good manager who once lead an unfashionable club to the Premiership.

We have been angry because we have been frustrated - we need to consign this season to history (although take positives from this season as well) and start a fresh.

Well Mike Newell was a nasty man but he got us promoted, albeit with Wilsons squad. Moved on and did better, whilst still being a nasty man. So I've heard. (For his legal team).

Cooper away record rivalled this seasons at times but he comes out smelling of roses.

Danny Wilson got us promoted. Okay, hasn't set the world on fire this season.

So why do we dislike managers who get us promoted?? sctatchinghead sctatchinghead

Well 14 Points Clear And He Fooked It Up.

Wilson Came In Got Us Up Then Everything Went Pair Shaped Ever Since With His Shoddy Tactics And His Signings.

Yeah but Newell built that 14 point lead so it was his to throw away. I looked at that seasons fixtures when we were 14 points in front and I couldn't see that we'd get many more.

We didn't get promoted this season we didn't get relegated. I suppose it depends what you want off your team?? I can think of four that'd swap positions?

How many people have really short memories? I'll never forgive Newell, and always have to set the record straight about the "14 point lead was his to lose" comments.

What happened was, he took over from Turner, who had built up a tremendous team playing at 100% of their abilities and had the perfect system\tactics\mentality for that division ingrained into the team. Newell left things rolling along nicely and left Turner's legacy going as it was. My grandma could have gone in and built that 14 point lead up just by leaving things alone.

Then he tinkered. Started making his own, very poor, changes to the team and the tactics. Huge mistake. 14 point lead, and our first ever title, lost. That day at Rushden will live long in the memory and the feeling of anger and disappointment will live on in many of the 1,300+ Poolies that were there. And it was all Newell's fault. rage

Didn't Turner build the lead before he left and Newell took over??

Does anyone think we wouldn't have won the league if Turner had stayed???

Nah, there was only a point or two in it before Turner left.

And lets not forget that there was lot of misty eyed sentiment about Turner walking out mid season as well. 'Ah well it's his home town team, supported them all his life, dream job....' When actually in a cynical career move and for much bigger money, he was like a rat up a drainpipe.

AND tapped up a couple of players. So I'm told.

I stand corrected then if that's true!

Anyone got the stats/tables at the time of Turner leaving? Just out of interest like!

It'll certainly be on Mad Johns site and I have been known to be wrong before. confised

There is a big error on there though that says when we got promoted in 1968 the last game was against Swansea when I know for a fact it was Doncaster.

And while we are countering popular urban myth with facts:

Wilson's disastrous last 13 games of the season : 4 wins, two draws and seven defeats

The magnificent Cooper's last 13 games : 3 wins 3 draws and seven defeats

Cooper's was a form sacking because the board had absolutely no faith in Cooper's ability to get the team motivated to get a point at Bournemouth. They were right - we were much better at Bournemouth and at home against Tranmere than we had been for the last 3 months under Cooper.

I know most on here regard Cooper as a messiah and Wilson as the worst manager in the world. I would say they were both above average managers. Only of course Wilson has turned the ship around after 18 months of decline and got us a promotion. Cooper inheritted a very good confident side and added to it well to achieve a play-off place.

And if I really wanted to be devil's advocate I'd say it would be a struggle not to be successful with a player of Boyd's quality in the form he was in.

Good figures mate but I've repeated those Cooper stats at least five times on the board and they just don't cut any ice, though it's usually been to compare them with Newell's famous last 13 of 3 wins 6 draws and 4 losses.

People will just ignore those facts then come back and tell us in six month's time (or whenever else we're not serially winning games) how much better we were under Cooper than under Jose Mourinho or whoever.

Why say 13 games? That's a strange figure to put across isn't it? or could it be that your using such a strange figure to manipulate your view that Wilson is on a par with Cooper? rolfl

Why not try both managers last 9 games. That's a stupid number i've pulled out the hat!

Wilson - W1 D2 L6
Cooper - W3 D3 L3

If that doesn't make you happy, compare their results over 45 games in the season

Dunno about the parent post to mine, but the 13 in my case is because that was the start of the Newell season going down the pan (we'd beaten Swansea 4-0 in the previous game to take a fourteen point lead and that was as good as it ever got).

9 of those 24 teams from that division in 2002/03 are now in the Conference!!! :-o
Also Shrewsbury and Carlisle makes 11, but they've since came back up!! It just goes to show that playing in the Conference these days is not as traumatic a thing as it would have been 20 years ago. Most of the grounds are good, even clubs who've never been in the Football League (Crawley, Stevenage, Burton, Forest Green).
This was a thread diversion brought to you by Bovril

I was comparing Cooper's record to that of Danny Wilson in L1. Cooper unfortunately never had the opportunity to manage us in L2. If he had, we'd have won the league. Cooper also took on a side that he knew nothing about and took us to 2 consecutive play-offs. Wilson landed in L1 and fell to bits with a team he knew plenty about.

No comparison between the two managers IMO.

Do you mean the 'body language' thing?

Perhaps he shouldn't have sulked but there was a definite impression he's been manoevred into a position and then condemned by it. Wasn't he left to field what was virtually a youth team for weeks on end?

Well if Wilson is there tonight let's spike his drink.

And Elliott and Foley too.

Although the Mail on Sunday did say in their match report, "...the outstanding David Foley." Can anybody who was at the match tell me if it was true?

Comparing Wilsons record in league two to Coopers in league one just shows up the futility of statistics. .

Groan, not that old tabloid chestnut.......Sam Allardyce is fookin' LIFTING with passion but he's still shit. Like a lot of managers he got lucky for a couple of seasons and his reputation exceeds his ability.

Neale Coopers passionate, dedicated, walk through walls squad lost ten straight away from home. It was fookin' WOEFUL. I never missed one of them. He didn't star at Gillingham either did he? And even you could manage Peterheed.
