Best thing that could happen to Labour - everyone will be reminded what Tory rule is like. Is it just me or does Brown look like he's wilting under the pressure?

yeah, it's fookin brilliant now  , at least in the bad old Tory days you could go to your local hospital before Labour 'improved' it by running it down...and I'm an ex Labour voter. It's a party run by smiley people in sharp suits with experience of jack shit who lost touch with their real aims years ago. The Students Union with a makeover.

Wedgy Benn was far left, but the difference between someone as intelligent as him and an odious turd like Livingstone is huge. There have been great Labour politicians who never got in power, people like Michael Foot - yet Tony "Smarm" Blair was PM for 10 years!! A man of no substance gets to be PM, yet a genuinely brilliant man like Foot never got a sniff- because the British public are too image-conscious!! I think Kinnock may have made a good PM!! We are obviously a country of people with little substance thses days!!!

What is your definition of a great politician?
I find the two words a bit incongruous like.

Wedgie is also a bounder, a clever man, no doubt, but a bounder

Instead of facing up to Margo in the early 80's he and Foot and the other useless bounders spent years arguing about nuclear disarmament, clause 902934945934939 and so on and so forth, and because of this she had them by the bollox

Only until Mandelson came along and told them that the vast majority of people didn't like the Labour Party as it was they were fooked

People might not of liked Blair, they may of hated him, but he was the best leader the Labour Party have had in my lifetime, and the BNP have more chance of winning the next election then Labour under Gordon Brown

Just my opinion like.....

I think Foot was a man who believed in something and was prepared to stick to it, whereas Blair would pigeon-hole himself into whatever was in vogue. I admire people who have principles and stick to them, like. Multilateral nuclear disarmament is a must for the future of mankind, unfortunately there are crackpots such as Kim Jong-il about.
Ultimately the campaign for nuclear disarmament was given a huge boost by the events of Chernobyl, which showed what a horrible thing nuclear disasters are. Nuclear weapons would cause far worse damage than that, and it's fair to say Gorbachev acknowledged this in the immediate aftermath. The sad thing is there are still too many despots in the world and somebody, somewhere, will always want to get their hands on the damn things. Horrible people, but there you go.

I agree, but at that time, people were more concerned about getting a job, rather then scrapping nuclear arms....
And shortly after that, they were more concerned about getting 1p in the £ from their tax bill

Why do two you think he's an improvement, as a matter of interest?
I should hope Boris IS pretty clever, after all the money spent on his exclusive education, but what has he ever done or said to make anyone think he can be a good mayor?

I know someone who smacked Neil Kinnock really hard once at a private party at Glastonbury, for taking the piss out of the miners strike. He got a beautifully shiny black eye and Glynis said he deserved it.

He might have been the son of a certain upstanding Labour MP with the letters S-K-E and some N's in it.

No surprise to hear you say that cos you're a tory, but just out of interest what are you basing that "interesting" statement on?

You'd probably agree that in terms of intellect Johnson is not in the same league as Gordon Brown, but does that mean that either of them are effective leaders or politicians? Still, if you choose to support people who have nothing but contempt for you I guess that's your choice.

You mean all politicians hold us in contempt? or that we have a choice which politicians to support?

The frightening thing for me is the number of people I've heard of who've worked as secretaries for MPs and ministers and who believe from their experience that most politicians genuinely try to do their jobs to the best of their ability. If that's the case there's no hope at all. Politics just doesn't work

Yeah I think that the vast majority of politicians do hold us in comtempt but in my experience the Boris Johnsons of this world take it a bit further than most.

As I live in London I hope he does a good job but it doesn't look promising - if he's so clever you'd have thought he might have got costings for his key policy proposals but for some reason he didn't bother!

Over the moon Boris is the new Mayor of London. Lets hope David Cameron can led the Conservatives to victory in the next general election.

This is a very big moment in British POLITICS.

This is very much like the Blair victory in the 1995 local elections.which preceded Labour`s landside election victory in 1997.

Give Boris 3 months and he'll be out on his ar$e. He is now mayor of one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world and he'll put his foot in it, abuse races, culture and generally show himself to be the predjudiced, upper-class, inexperienced, inbred twat that he is. Livingstone was no ideal at all, but at least he understood politics, has a basis of political doctrine that he follows - agree with it or not - and has experience of running a multi-million pound municipal organisation. Boris has none of those things, and , as previously mentioned - is a twat. The LiberalDemocrat gadgie who was ex Met polis would have probably been a better bet, but LibDems are apparantly unelectable.

Boris, the clock is ticking. Take of that stupid hat, put yer dick back in yer pants and try to do a real job.

Not a hope.

Leave Boris alone he is a very clever politican who has plently of drive and ambition to make it as a good Mayor.
Just read his articles in the Daily Telegraph to see the sense he talks and lets not forget he was Editor of the Spectator magazine.

so in effect what the anti-boris posters are saying is that they know better than the majority of london voters who voted him in.

well done, its a skill to be proud of yawn1

So disliking/distrusting Johnson means that you must automatically support labour? Eh? There's a bit of logic missing somewhere along the line there, surely? It's interesting the way the votes went though - basically the suburbs voted for johnson and the central areas for livingstone - dunno if that means a great deal though.

I'm no supporter of livingstone but his record over the last 8 years is a good one especially on transport. Like I said I hope johnson does a good job but I'll be amazed if he does. Possibly a pyrrhic victory for the tories in the longer term this one. We'll see................
