Because the Belgrano and the Venticinco de Mayo were engaged in a pincer movement against the fleet. Any other suggested reason is nonsense.

Check out the armaments on that Cruiser (ARA Belgrano) if they had have parked it in Stanley harbour there is no doubt whatsoever that the Argies would have beaten us without breaking sweat. They could have shelled us land forces to death with those 10 inch guns which had a 25 mile range. She also had fifteen 6-inch guns and eight 5-inch guns.

As a weapons platform it was fearsome and much better off from our perspective at the bottom of the oggin.
