I'm pretty sure Henry Smith was one of the local industrialists who set up charity funds in Hartlepool, to enable children from poor families to got to school.
Not sure of his details but shall try to find out........

Mr Bresslaw you might remember my grandad then?? He was the school electrician/ lab technician there, and moved to the St Peter's site when Henry's closed on the Headland. I can still remember him working there (the old Henry's) during the school holidays, and I'd go there with my mates to see him. I missed the old Henry's by one year, I started at the King Oswy site straight from West View.

Henry Smith was born in Wandsworth, South London, in May 1548. He was a successful salter by trade and purchased estates in various parts of England. During his life he created a number of charitable trusts for the relief of the poor and he died in 1628 leaving his Trustees the sum of £2000.

This sum formed the basic endowment of the Henry Smith (Kensington Estate) Charity, so called because the Trustees purchased a small farm in the parishes of Kensington, Chelsea and St Margaret's Westminster. The estate was developed over the years and in 1995 was sold to the Wellcome Trust. The Charity's capital endowment now consists of a substantial portfolio of stock market investments, commercial property and agricultural property.

A wall monument to Henry Smith is located in Wandsworth Parish Church.

So basically it's a gadgie who has absolutely fook all to do with Hartlepool, right?

They were important in the heavy chemical industry cos they provided the salt on which chlorine chemicals were based.

I was there from '65 till '70.

I'm surprised the front door is open in the pic. We were certainly never allowed to come in through it.

There's a distinct family likeness. He's hanging on to the old three piece suite though isn't he.
