Mr Gaunt - This has been done to death - Sweeney is rubbish in the centre of midfield - he hardly touches the ball and when he isn't scoring on a regular basis he is contributing very little. Sometimes when he plays in that posistion it is like playing with 10 men as he always goes missing. He has done a bit better as a right sided midfielder lately but whether he can be consistantly effective over a long period in that posistion remains to be seen.

If you think that him and Liddle playing centre of midfield will give HUFC the platform to push towards the play offs next season then enjoy living in cloud cuckoo land......

I must admit he hasn't lived up to the early expectations of him, when he was regularly scoring goals from midfield a few years ago. Maybe this division has found him out a bit? Depending on the deal he is on I still think he is worth retaining though. clappp

Might be wrong but did he not score 17 goals or around that in this very league?

Why let the stats get in the way of a good moan about Sweeney from Jonny though, eh?!

The turning point in Sweeney's career came when Cooper 'left', coinciding with the demise of Sweeney's most effective partner, Mark Tinkler. Sweeney did all the ugly, dirty work in midfield. He was the one who harried and chased. He closed people and space down, making the opposition playmakers play hurriedly and he is very good at that. The problem is that the majority of fans only see what happens on the ball and ignore what goes on off it. Whilst doing this harrying job under Cooper, he was also allowed and encouraged to bomb forward. From that he got goals, which endeared him to the fans. At the same time as Cooper left our holding midfielder, Mark Tinkler, started to pick up injuries. The Tinkler/Sweeney partnership was no more and Sweeney has suffered since. Tinkler was the reason Cooper encouraged Sweeney to bomb forward. Our managers since have not encouraged that as much. On top of that we have not replaced Tinkler in the holding role.
So the start of the 2005-06 season saw Scott in charge. Amongst other pairings in central midfield, Scott played the Turnbull/ Bullock combination 22 times, nearly half a season. The goals dried up, not only from Sweeney, but from everywhere else as well. Since then Sweeney has been in and out of the side and is now virtually a utility player.
If you want to see the Sweeney of old then get a tough tackling, no nonsense midfielder who can actually pass a football, a la Tinkler, into the holding role. Not someone like Boland who can only pass effectively sideways or backwards. Not somebody like McCunnie who can pass a ball forward but not to a Pools player.
If Sweeney had been available this summer there would have no shortage of takers, believe you me. Donny were drooling over the prospect of a Wellens/Sweeney combination. Imagine Sweeney at his best in this current Donny side.
Now we have secured his services for another two years, lets try and use him to best effect.

It's a fair point, well made, Tickhill. It's fair to say that Sweeney hasn't been played in the attacking midfield role that he was a few years ago for a while now. So, I guess it's not surprising he hasn't scored the same amount of goals. He's a hard worker and is a good athlete - lets hope he can get back to his best over the next few years.

Tommy Docherty, ex Bristol City, QPR (I think) is the midfield man we need.
Although he was struggling with injuries last season, with Wycombe.

In our promotion winning game he was running their midfield, till he was forced of
with an injury.

Scrap that, can't find him on Soccerbase, maybe the injuries have finally done for him.

Anyone know what happened to him ?

Proof if proof were needed that you're not superwatty. This is one of the best if not the best and well thought out arguements on this board for some time. Certainly much better than some prat saying INDEED all day.

Sweeney has Poolie written right through him. His interview after signing his new contract on Poolsworld had relief all over it. The bloke wants to be here (there, 'cos I'm not) and he's a damn good player.

That is all ((c) Yubep)
