I still have a scar on my little finger where I got speared trying to nick Dave Foy's roasties. I expect now they're only allowed plastic cutlery.

At my nephews school they let (or were letting) them choose what ever they liked.....

Now most kids being kids, choose an Irish mixed grill to go with the main choice, so it was pizza, chips, rosties and mash.. no veggies whatsoever

Asking me what my favourite school dinner was is a bit like asking me how I'd like my cock chopped off.

After chopping do you want it braising, grilling or frying, after of course giving it the tenderiser treatment.

Now then Grabec, when recounting incidents that conjur up embarrassing memories, calling blancmange 'pink custard' doesn't rate very high on the Richter scale. I wish my embarrassments were confined to the colour of the custard.

I remember a similar thing in the seventies, all the kids were off school for about four weeks. We loved it!

When I was teaching there were two people who you had to know really well and that wasn't the head it was the caretaker in case you needed help to repair things and the cook who would always give you extra if you smiled nicely. Thinking about it I had school dinners for over 35 years.

Ther was nothing wrong with Elwick Rd Secondary Modern it was great school and I was inspired to go and teach thanks to this place.

I never stopped for school dinner. When we lived on the Headland, I walked home, first from Baltic Street Juniors, and later Henrys. When we moved up near the Queen, at the top of Warren Road, I used to catch a bus home every day, for a home cooked meal. The run down Union Bank, and along Durham Street, was a bit of a challenge some days, especially if we'd had Woodwork last morning lesson, and Mr Kirtley didn't let us out on time.

especially in a big school like tunny where you always had other more important jobs to do
and the school cooks were very important
most caretakers could be found in the kitchen at some point in the morning for tea and sausage sarnies in nice freshly made buns

the art dept at tunny was very friendly with fred and pete morrey and norma box
unless you were a pupil of course
