Until Saturday that is.

It is true mind you that we can make the play offs, but Christ help us if we were successful in them.

Strangely enough I was just thinking about this the other day and even considered putting a Poll up about it. The poll's title would have been "Was this as good as it will ever get?".

The "this" in question being Jon Daly's goal against Sheffield Wednesday. Will it prove to be the culminating point of Pools history? I think we have to be honest and admit there's a very realistic chance it will. But if Pools can prove me wrong and win the play-offs, spending even just one unsuccessful season in the championship, I'll be delighted.
"Christ help us" doesn't even get near to coming into the equation.

And for the record, play-off winners, even the dodgy ones, don't struggle any more on average in the higher division than the automatically promoted teams do. Barnsley and Blackpool for example were nowt special in this league, but Southend and Scunny who romped the league when the former won their respective play-offs were/are quite simply out of their depth.

I think we would have to ask IOR - what are their ambitions for the club? If they are willing to plough more money in (and the lack of this they always put down to not owning the ground) then there is no reason why we couldn't get into the Championship. It only takes money - even if we haven't got the support base...

I was talking about this on Saturday night with Bristol City fans, the whole idea of "is this as good as it will get". They were of the opinion (and I agree) that this season, right now, could be unmatched by anything that happens in the future. They have a very realistic chance of winning promotion from the Championship, and could even finish top. If they do, any future seasons will be lesser ones. Next season would bring a relegation fight, or possibly more realistically a relegation acceptance. They would receive a bewilderingly large amount of money for even that one season, making any future success in the Championship a lesser achievement. What they are doing now is largely down to a winning momentum, good players and great management. They are loving every minute of it because they don't see a future containing anything much like it.

that's about the sum total isn't it? Teams like Watford, Charlton and and West Brom are now becoming the Championship's equivalent of those teams who always get into the Champions League. If Bristol City (and for that matter Stoke) get promoted, then it is a hell of an achievement based on good management and organisational/motivational skills. It also means Gary Johnson would become a very sought-after manager (ditto Tony Pulis - who is strangely hated by Stoke fans, and by fans of any other club he's managed such as Gillingham and Bournemouth). I wonder how much those last two clubs wish he was still their manager.
