111 Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
REME (Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers) wksps - the mechanics workshop
Wuppertal is the location, probably Northern Germany.
Not sure about the GW bit but I bet G stands for general.

It must be years ago because I don't think the RASC have existed since the fifties.

There's one or two ex REME on here who might know what the GW stands for.

The fifties was a guess but Google tells me this:

Quote:
Finally the Corps incorporated with other units to form The Royal Corps of Transport in 1965, following reorganization and rationalization of the Armed Services to meet the modern international requirements.

So in layman's terms is it safe for me to say he was an engineer

I think I've tracked him down to just north of here and from speaking to several ex poolies who were in nat service and so on, most of them are fairly proud that they did it and don't seem keen if you get it wrong!

A bit more info is needed before you can say for sure as its entirely possible he could have been a storeman in the workshops. The RASC were a logistics unit - stores and stuff. But it looks a safe bet, he certainly worked in an engineering location and the chances are that he was a vehicle mechanic.

Mr PMT is ex REME (rough engineering made easy) as Pooliekev renamed them. So he will have more insight and detail but I'm sure he won't disagree with the above.

Just spoke to the player and it's a different lad who was based in Germany - same unusual name though - anyway this was in the Ordnance Corps in Bicester. Didn't really care for it by the sounds of it. Still nice bloke.

I once went to that place to collect some stuff. Horrible place to be based, its just a huge network of warehouses. I never did understand why anyone would join up to work there.

But when you join up you don't know where you will be working, do you?

No but you know what you'll be doing. When you choose your SQ/Trade, delete as appropriate, and say 'yes, I'll be a Storeman, you should be able to have a rough stab in the dark it will at some point include a warehouse.

If GW is the same for the Pongo's as it was for us it will stand for general workshop.

I would think that the (gw) does stand for general workshop. This is the address of the R.E.M.E workshop attached to the 111 Company R.A.S.C., so the person would most likely be a member of the R.E.M.E.
