I've just been reading something about the definition of 'class' what class are you lot? And pleeeeeeeeeese... no 'I'm working class and proud of it' speeches.

As Mr J Lennon (singer with a popular beat combo of the time) said

"And you think you're so clever and classless and free,
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see, "

it's not that, though, is it? Most people work. If you ask yourself which class you identify with, or which class's lifestyle/aspirations are closest to your own, it's much more difficult.

As I suspected, I am a misfit.....

well, I do consider myself working class
rent a house off the council
do an unskilled job
drive a shite car
drink in the legion
going to spain on the bus for me jollies

if I wasn't so well dressed I'd be chav scum!

aspirations.....well everyone wants better but sometimes its unattainable

Well I think of middle-class aspirations as being about material things and status. Most normal people would rather drink in the Legion than in a Golf Club......but that's probably cos we'd rather have a laugh than have our ears bent about someone's latest promotion or big car.

Also, you may do an unskilled job to get the money in, but ....you're a drummer. I don't think 'working class' even exists any more in the sense it did in my Dad's day, when you were just defined as a workman and had no chance to develop any talent you might have had

Surely if you're offering the choices you should also propose a definition for each of the available options otherwise there is no constant to measure against?

I don't think there is a constant though. What class you think you are depends on how you label other people and whether you identify with/want to distance yourself from them.

Any road, am sure Mutley's definition is very upper class....sounds like the sort of thing Prince Philip might do a lot....
