there's a noise coming out of my car, just a loud slightly rattling noise from near the engine.

and it seems to be using a lot of oil - like a litre every 4 or 5 weeks(there's no leak, i've checked)

what is wrong with it?

thanks in advance

You're going to have to be more specific: is the noise slight or is it loud? Is it a tapping noise or more of a heavy noise? With no leak and using oil and making a rattling noise I'm thinking bottom end of the engine; crank pistons etc.

When an engine loses oil it has to go somewhere. It's not like water which can evaporate. Usual places are into the cylinders which makes the car produces smoke. Have you noticed any excessive smoke coming from the exhaust?

i've not noticed any excessive smoke. i'll have a look though.

the pistons have knacked up twice in the last two years, requiring extensive (& expensive) work.

I think maybe the engine's destined to completely bugger up once a year, no matter what I do. Oh well.

The car belonging to my mrs does something similiar to yours nick but there is no noise, the drive seems to be getting a fair bit of oil on it but I can't find a leak anywhere. it is a Nissan Micra

If there is oil on the drive there is a leak - just trust me on this one Fens

ps: it could of course be back pressure forcing oil up through places where oil really shouldn't go, in which case it really has got problems.

Close; a 93 Corsa Merit. Bottom of the range - doesn't even have the usual Corsa display for the radio! I've had it more than 5 years and it's done nearly 120000 miles. A bit of WD40 on the distributor cap last night to keep the water out and it started no problem this morning!!!

My mate went to Poland and back in his Corsa Merit with the wife and two children. They brought half their house back with them as well and it never wavered. You must have bought a duff 'un.

It's been bloody class. Just a few problems now and then, nothing too bad. The problems at the moment are all down to a bit of damp; WD40 sorts that out (plus it makes me cycle to work - not a bad thing!)

Nowt wrong with Corsa's! It's predessesor - the Nova had to change its name when they released it in Spain and Portugal. Nova in Spanish means 'doesn't go'

Same story with the Golf. The original name in German was the VW Krappie. They wisely decided that it wasn't a good marketing ploy to call it that.

I never understood why the Golf got called the Rabbit in the States.

Because "Rabbit dramatizes the enhanced performance, playing off the car's clever design, efficient size, agility and nimbleness"......thats the Americans for you!
